Ataturk Twin Towers in Larkana, Pakistan : On Friday, November 30, 1973, Pakistan's former Prime Minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, inaugurated a memorial dedicated to the founder of the Turkish Republic, Kemal Ataturk, in Larkana. This event marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Turkish Republic.
The memorial, named Ataturk Tower, features twin towers on the 82-foot (25 meters) monument, symbolizing the strong bond between Turkey and Pakistan. Unfortunately, due to its location on the road leading to Bakrani city, the locals started referring to it as Bakrani Tower instead of Ataturk Tower. This renaming moment is significant as it represents the enduring friendship between the two nations.
Bhutto proposed the construction of this memorial shortly after the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971. During the opening ceremony, he expressed that the memorial reflected the deep admiration the Pakistani people have for Kemal Ataturk.
The Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey, Ilhan Oztrak, represented Turkey at the event. Oztrak highlighted that this memorial was the first of its kind for Ataturk outside Turkey, emphasizing the profound historical ties between Turkey and Pakistan.
Bhutto had a history of constructing monuments dedicated to the heads of states of friendly countries, such as the Sukarno Tower in Larkana, named after the Indonesian President Sukarno.
