The ancient Huaca Cortada (100 to 700 AD) is visible 500 meters beyond the Museo Cao site museum at the Complejo arqueológico El Brujo in northern Perú. Huaca Cortada is an adobe Moche stepped truncated pyramid 22 meters high. The gash on the front of the pyramid may have been made by grave robbers. The Complejo arqueológico El Brujo is famous for the ancient Moche murals on Huaca Cao Viejo which were created by first laying down a thick layer of mud on which the design was drawn. Then a thin layer of color was applied. One of these ancient Moche mural may show a supernatural being half bird and half snake. Another features the principal Moche diety Aiapaec (the Decapitator).

Sometimes I feel simply 5* wouldn't do justice. This place could easily deserve 10+*. This is an ancient archaeological site that was occupied from preceramic times. The Chicama Valley can be considered as an archaeological microcosm. Huaca Prieta is the earliest part of the complex but the biggest constructions on the site belong to the Moche culture. In this area, there are also the remains of the later Lambayeque and Chimú.
The site is very nicely developed, very well maintained, and the information system (including, of course, guides) is very good. The open air displays as well as the museum is amazing. Not to be missed.

Impressive place. Most tourists who visit Peru just think of Machu Picchu and Cusco region. There is a whole other previous culture in other parts of Peru. The Moche people. It is a must to visit at least three or four of their sites.

If you're. Interested in keep learning about Peruvian history, this is a good to do it. Before visited Chan Chan or Huaca del Sol y la Luna, you should visited Huaca El Brujo to hear about La Señora de Cao. Wear sneakers and bring some sunscreen.

So glad we made the journey from Trujillo to visit the site! A thoughtful museum, Amazingly well preserved and interpreted mummy, plus the site itself with the English audio tour. LOVED IT!

Good to see community use of the site too.

Great museum and information from the guide in Spanish around the site about the history was excellent. Also lots of English signs up with information to read. Only a small gift shop with a variety of souvenirs, chocolate and soft drinks to buy. Opportunity to dress up and have a photo for a small fee as well as a further tour of the magical well with a shame for another fee.

Caos's museum was featured in an architecture magazine some years ago. I remember wanting to go there with my family but went with my boyfriend recently instead. The vicinity is gorgeous compared to any other archeological site museum the only thing is that they force a guide upon one and he can be very impatient if you refuse to pay him. The entrance should cover it but at that time we were the only ones left there was a great view of field crops upon ascending but he kinda mislead us and we couldn't take a picture of it. I still rate it 5 cos its something rather careful to sent a guide with every visitor and it keeps the vicinity intact. Transportation to the site should be roundway or you will have a harsh time finding out how to return to town.

Nice museum explaining the historical and cultural setting of the huaca del Cao. Exhibiting the mummy of the dama del Cao. A major discovery in that it is the first find of a women in power of the Moche culture and Peru in general.
Museum is well thought through, has nice tables and explaining graphics combined with explanatory texts in English and Spanish.

The most incredible waka I got to visit. The summit of waka de cao is breathe taking. The museum follows similar design methodology that the ancient Peruvian used to design with and the museum itself has exquisite details and items to show anybody of interest! The lady of cao is kept in such amazing state, I couldn't believe I was seeing a real mummy!

The site is worth the visit from Trujillo. The recently opened museum and archeological site is home to the grave of the Lady of Cao, a ruler of the Moche civilisation, buried with an impressive collection of artefacts. A rare find of a female leader with top governmental power.

Unbelievably well-done presentation of archaeology from tomb for this warrior-priestess-queen who died in childbirth around 300 AD. Youll want to book 2/3 if a day for the bumpy bus ride from Trujillo. If your schedule permits, pair this with going to see the Lord of Sipán, near Chiclayo. Same civilization, but 300 years apart.
