Cementerio Chino Way On Kon Ce

After reading about this historic cemetery, I decided to pay a visit during the annual Qingming festival. As expected the place was full of families paying respects to their ancestors. There is no better time to appreciate the historical significance.

For the history enthusiasts, this place signifies the resting place of many of the Chinese who immigrated during the construction of the Panama Railroad. It was purchased by the Sociedad Way On in 1882. During the Qingming festival, I noticed workers performing tasks consistent with tradition - cleaning the graves, cutting overgrown grass, painting monuments, offering of traditional foods, burning of joss paper and firecrackers. The festival only happens for a few days every year - April four to six. Other than that, the place has a loose schedule. You may visit practically any day, any time.
