My birthday dinner at Proto.

As I’m a big foodie, so when it’s my birthday, I like to go somewhere nice, something outside of the box.

Proto has always been up go snuff, but since the - rather tragic - fire incident, they’ve upped their game and promised me an ‘Experience Menu’. Needless to say what we chose.

A pumpkin rose, steak tartare tonato, gamba’s with asperges, duck breast filet and one pistachio eclair later the only fault I could find was proportion wise. Less is more and I was just a tad too full at the end.

Other than that, I think they could give Michelin a run for their money.

Lovely restaurant on the water with a tapa style fixed menu, a la carte and a regular menu. Portions are small so definitely have 2 courses. The owner is most helpful.

Early dinner on Saturday: avocado piri piri, shrimp curry, peach dessert with hibiscus tea gelée - delicious, tasty, good mixture of flavours. Added white Rioja without breaking the bank. Will be back...

Good food, great location next to the water, friendly staff

I can express it in 1 word, excellent The quality of the food was how it supposed to be. It was a busy evening so I took a while before we got our food, but it was worth it. We had a friendly waitress and the way the restaurant looks is very pleasing. Definitely a come back.

Great location, especially if you have good weather and get a good table on the terrace next to the Rhine.

Proto is our favorite place in Alphen aan den Rijn. We love it! Tip: try the Italian Chicken Panini.
