The ancient culture of Igbo-Ukwu (meaning “Great Igbo”) left behind a rich record of visual art with impeccable craftsmanship and complex symbolism. It is possible that the ancient culture of Igbo-Ukwu represents the ancestral legacy of the Igbo/Ibo people, one of Nigeria’s largest ethnic groups.

The museum houses many sophisticated bronze artifacts that predate other well known ones like the Ife bronze, Benin bronze of Edo state etc. Because many artifacts were lost, Igbo sons and daughters who were arts inclined were authorized to reproduce an imitation of some of them as a way to preserve the heritage.
It's a wonderful place.
