THE HERITAGE OF EZE IDIGO KING

THE HERITAGE OF EZE IDIGO KINGSHIP OF AGULERI BY CHIEF (SIR) TONY IDIGO JP, IKOLO AGULERI & CHIDIUME IDIGO dynasty came into existence before Christ was born.

Dynasties, family or group that maintains, for several generations, political power over a state or geographic entity.

began in the Bronze Age. The word dynasty simply means a succession of rulers from the same family.

The first pre-history dynasty was said to be that of Xia, (Hsia).

The Hsia dynasty existed from about the 21″ to the 16″ century BC.

The union of culture and civilization started the dynastic period in Africa.

The history of dynasty has been challenging for researchers in the field of African Studies because of the dearth of information consequent upon the scarcity of written materials.

However the earliest known inhabitants of the geographic entity, now known as Nigeria, were members of the ancient Nok Culture.

For centuries Hausa dynasties ruled what was to become Northern Nigeria until the Fulani Jihad of Uthman Dan Fodio in 1804.

The Jihad was a revolt by the Hausa commons against the old Hausa dynasties.

The Zaria dynasty fled to Abuja and that of Kebbi retreated to Argungu.

The Fulani dynasty ushered in by Uthman Dan Fodio existed in the Northern part of Nigeria until the British took control in 1903.

The first dynasty in Benin kingdom, the Ogosi dynasty, existed between 40 BC and 16 AD.

According to oral history of the Binis, the first Ogosi of the Benin kingdom was known as Ogodo, and he was said to have descended from the sky.

Ogodo’s wisdom was said to be equivalent to that of the biblical King Solomon.

The Idigo dynasty of the Iruokechi Royal family of Aguleri, Anambra State dates back to the 19 Century.

With the collapse and disintegration following succession disputes, of the Aguve dynasty in Umuezeora, Enugu-Aguleri the town reverted to governance by the Ndichie or Council of Elders (Gerontocracy).

This form of rulership lasted for several centuries until the rise to power of Onyekomeli Idigo (later known as Ogbuayinya Idigo) in the middle of the 19″ Century.

The European encroachment on the Niger, the military aggression that resulted from the bid of the then Royal Niger Company to expand its operations, and the activities of the Christian Missionaries not only helped to consolidate the reign of Ogbuanyinya Idigo as the natural ruler and leader of Aguleri, but extended his power and influence to far and beyond.

De Facto Ruler of Aguleri Progenitor of the Idigo family Founder of the Idigo Dynasty (1900-date) Brought Western Civilisation to Aguleri Brought Christianity to Aguleri Father of Modern Aguleri Possesses Outstanding Courage and Wisdom *Extended Aguleri Territory to far and beyond PROFILE OF OGBUANYINYA ONYEKOMELI IDIGO As a result of his outstanding courage and personality, was a successful warlord. On account of his exploits Ogbuayinya Onyekomeli Idigo assumed power and authority over Aguleri Territory and consequently, the people of Aguleri recognized him as their defacto leader and ruler. Onyekomeli Idigo led Aguleri to many successful exploits and expanded Aguleri territory to far and beyond.

He was a priest and minister of the great “Aro” deity.

He invented a large wooden drum, “Ikolo”, which was used to call his attention back home whenever he sojourned far from Aguleri.

Today, a miniature Ikolo is used by an incumbent traditional ruler to herald day break in Aguleri, and to summon people for extra ordinary events.

In 1884, when officers of then British National African Company (later Royal Niger Company) arrived at the bank of Anambra River at Odene (wharf) Eziagulu in search of trade and commerce, the whole town fled believing that white ghosts and spirits had invaded the town.

Onyekomeli Idigo, in his usual display of bravery and tenacity, was the only person who had the courage to confront the “white spirits”.

He later discovered that they were humans and not white spirits.
