Got introduced to Mr Gooi, owner of Chengal House by another wood enthusiast. Chengal House is a must visit for wood lovers and interior designers for unique, one of its kind pieces. They have plenty of recycled timber and antique furniture collections to choose from(usually one visit is not enough). He showed us around his furniture showroom and wood workshop during our visit.

Besides that, Mr Gooi also consulted us patiently on our renovation details and supplied us antique table, custom made doors, recycled timber, roof tiles and granites. Good quality, customed to our needs and very responsive. Even helped us arrange transport to Melaka.

Looking to spice up your home? Speak to Mr Gooi and visit this place to get some inspiration

Truly a gem! New home/boutique hotel owners, especially, MUST visit this wonderful warehouse before you look elsewhere. And have a good chat with its owner Mr Gooi. His staff were all friendly and welcoming.

Mr. Gooi hosts an amazing showroom and warehouse full of vintage and antique treasures! He’s very helpful, friendly, and responds promptly. Please be sure to message or phone him in advance to ensure the shop is open for your visit. Nibong Tebal is a lovely area of mainland Penang. Google will take you directly to Chengal House.

It was by chance that I came across the place Cengal House in Nibong Tebal in a newspaper article recently. I felt an urgency to visit it. And what an awesome, elegant and charming place it is, a treasure trove of discarded good wood put to use creatively. The owner Mr. Gooi Kok Wah was not in on the day of our visit but his very pleasant , capable and knowleageable staff Ah Chye attended to us. Ah Chye was warm and friendly and he has the sweetest smile on his face.

I made numerous phone calls to Mr. Gooi regarding some antique furniture that I saw. Although I did not purchase anything yet but the guidance and advice given by Mr. Gooi was great. I learnt a lot about antique furniture from him via phone calls. Thank you Mr. Gooi. You are so kind.

What you will feel after leaving his barn is..."Oh my God, why did I throw away or give away my old precious things."

And if you do visit Cengal House in Nibong Tebal go and have fantastic fresh curry prawns, fish, roti bakar at Lim Aik Chew.

Gooi is a de facto Southeast Asia museum curator. He “saves” architectural artifacts, historical antiques of cultural importance and either restores or repurposes them. A visit to the barn is always a daylong excision for us as we dig through piles of old dusty furniture, discuss what and how our finds can be restored, and tour The Barn for the cream of the crop. If lucky, the day is capped off with some Durian or Cempadek from Gooi’s nearby farm. Our condo is filled with treasures from this place...

An oasis and a treasure den, carefully hidden away by the owner of the property. This is a quick escape from the hustle and bustle of Georgetown. If you’re like me, an antique and vintage artifacts aficionado, then this place is for you. Not open to public, prior appointment is needed.

Gooi is a most interesting person. He understands and collects South East Asian items, many recycled architecture wood items and furniture from all over South East Asia. He can explain the differences of items between countries to the nuances of Hokkien, Hokka, Cantonese. If you have interest in these type of items, primarily wood items, it is a place to spend an afternoon. I recommend that you call a head for an appointment because Gooi travels to find these collections and mat not be there if you just pop in. Frankly, I'd rate Gooi with a 10 stars, but Google maps limits to 5. Gooi will modify or creat items for you, he has a wood shop on premises.

I found this planter chair at the barn! The barn is truly a place where u get to find something that u truly like. Take home the furniture that talk to you! Know the history of each piece of furniture by talking to the knowledgeable owner who is always ever willing to share his experience and u can usually get an interesting story that he has to tell.

Stumbled upon this place while scavenging for antique furniture. The owner was so hospitable. We chatted about my vision for a room I was furnishing and came up with some ideas. A few weeks later the room came together beautifully; furnished with a combination of antique and new pieces. The bed frame was reconstructed, featuring old colonial accents with repurposed wood and strong joints. So well thought through. I feel incredibly grateful to have found Chengal House. Their care, consideration, creativity, and speed are so invaluable and rare in this day and age. If you’re looking for unique antique pieces you need to come here.

Extremely interesting place. If you value wood, tradition, or even are just looking for something vintage, this is the place to go. The workers are also extremely helpful and so is the owner. Highly recommend you at least go check it out and if you have a few bucks to spare and the boot space, get something that will highly likely last to your great grandchildren's time.

The Barn has all things wood! There is a fantastic mix of colonial era furniture and cabinetry along with reclaimed beams, doors, and window frames from a bygone construction era - collected from all across southeast Asia. All this is housed under a massive warehouse roof where the proprietor also runs a wood-shop, making custom orders. I have lived in Indonesia and Malaysia over 35 years - where I developed a love and appreciation for antique furniture - especially the fine craftsmanship and old growth trees. The Barn is a special place where a wood lover can easily spend several hours poking around and come away with a unique find. I was overwhelmed by the size and scale of the operation. But The Barn is far more than just a wood warehouse - it is also an oasis of home, garden, and guest buildings, tastefully landscaped with a rural and open air ambiance. I was fortunate enough to visit during durian season and sample some of the very best of nature's fruit.

A VERY igneous way to save the trees but rescuing timber.. The barn show cases all kinds of unique furnitures made from timber rescued from old houses, churches etc.

The genius behind it is no other than Mr Jack Gooi Kok Wah. Once a trained accountant, he now develops properties, renovate old houses, rescued timber . His clients include Bon Ton resort in Langkawi where he dismantled old timber houses , transport them and refit them piece by piece . Other amazing works are endorsed by some of the famous architects around the world.

Check the barn out. Lovely place worth your trip.

This was a great place. I really enjoyed staying here and the nature sounds were amazing. The owner and the staff were very communicative. A perfect combination of old charm, modern convenience and excellent service. I love the “Ban House” Architecture.

This is the best place I have been to in Penang, in fact in much of Malaysia. Top products that come through the pipeline consistently, new and antique and refurbished old furniture. Nice hard to get antiques. The proprietor obviously has a keen eye. Service is immaculate as well, transport and delivery very good. Highly recommended.

It was without doubt an amazing, beautiful place with unique setting. It is a historical design building, Baba Nyonya mansion-like, complete with some wooden furnitures, old photographs and artefacts on display. Beside that, there is a lovely garden with a small waterfall inside. It sure took a lot of effort from everyone to build this place. On top of that, this is a chance that may meet but cannot be asked for those who looking for signature piece and antique collectors, there is a showroom for it. U also may have a deal with the owner which regarding with architecture salvages.

The Barn is a treasure trove of antique furnitures and fittings. It’s a place to acquire restoration architecture material. I was thrilled when I made a visit recently , that was when I found a Peranakan red and Gold altar table which fit in beautifully with my home decor.
