This is a fabulous and really well designed museum. My preschoolers really had a blast! We also enjoyed the garden and various galleries in the courtyard. Great for families, and really informative and fun!

This is a must visit Museum if you're visiting Chetumal.

If you're visiting the City you should visit this Museum to learn more about the Mayan culture. The entrance is 100 pesos for foreigners and 50 pesos for locals.
Something you should do which is completely optional is to look for a guide to give you a tour around the museum. The tour around the museum takes about 1 hour but it is absolutely worth it

Great little museum. We’ve been to a lot of Mayan ruins, and got so much out of this visit that we didn’t know before. It’s air conditioned, theatrically lit. After a long morning walk of the town, it was a great cool and interesting break. Well worth the $110 pesos per person.

Well designed museum. It goes into detail about the daily lives of the people. The permanent collection was well-curated. However, the temporary art exhibit was poorly curated. The works on display lacked a central theme outside of all being oil with spatula. They do good allowing local artists to show their work, though.

Probably the highlight of our visit to Chetumal. For 110$ MXM you get a relatively small but well equipped museum. It spans the entire indigenous history in the region. There's artefacts, modeled cities,. sculptures and animations. There's well written English descriptions everywhere. Interesting for both adults and children.

We have already visited several Mayan pyramids and it was interesting to summarize the experience. Briefly and clearly collected expositions about the various periods of the Maya Eplhi, from the heyday to the abandonment of cities. Many exhibits, unfortunately, are replicas, not originals. Lots of jungle and leopard sounds, I guess it's immersive

I’m not a museum expert but I really enjoyed my time here. Very interesting and the dim lighting creates a mysterious atmosphere. Most of the exhibits are reproductions but it was all very nicely presented. There is also an outdoor area featuring a recreation of a jungle village as well as side galleries with modern art.

Amazing museum with awesome displays. Only negative was that quite a few light bulbs were blown and not replaced so some displays and information couldn't be read because it was too dark.
Still worth the visit if you interested in mayan history and culture.

Although a bit sort on artifacts, this museum is wonderful if you care to learn more about Mayas. The jungle ambiance, the scale of the major sites, the informations about mayan mathematics, astronomy, religion all make it a wonderful experience.

This museum is small, but its decoration and style tries to make you feel as if you were in the jungle. The price, however, is a little more expensive for foreigners. I consider it a well-preserved and cheap museum to learn about the ancient Maya culture, but it needs a guide for foreigners. Although it is small, the way things are sorted out, tend to make you get lost and you may miss something.

$81p per person and we spent about 3.5 hours here and we read everything they had. There were English translations for everything. Very creative museum that really brought to life the Maya belief that everything is connected, through the gods, sky, Earth, and the underworld. Well constructed and well thought out presentation of Maya culture. Really informative, nicely done.

I throughly enjoyed it. Appreciated the English translations. Was great to learn about the different sites around Central America and the cultural traditions of Mayans which I knew little about.

It always amazes me that the same person that makes a negative value judgment about tourists says they don't want to visit Chetumal because "it's just a city".

Small but nice place in the center of a city that is the perfect representation of average life for the average person in Quintan Roo.

Cost: 100 pesos.

I found it interesting and was quite pleased with the whole museum.
I enjoyed the models of the cities the most.
It has a nice outdoor space surrounded by art work which we both enjoyed too.
Not a huge museum, but a must visit if in Chetumal.
The staff were very pleasant and we had a nice quiet, go at our own speed tour.

My sister and I visited this museum a few years back when our cruise ship was diverted from the intended port of call to Costa Maya instead. We disembarked and decided to walk around a bit before deciding what to do with our day. We could see the museum right away and since we are both kind of museum fan girl dorks, we had to check it out.

Folks, this isn't the Smithsonian. This is a small town, labor of love type museum but there are a lot of interesting exhibits and information about Mayan history and culture. While we visited, there were two men running the place (owners?) and they were extremely friendly and happy to answer questions and just chit chat with us. They were clearly very excited and passionate about sharing their knowledge about the Mayans.

There is a nice little gift shop that included some cool handmade items so my sister and I both purchased some souvenirs and gifts. I've seen some complaints about the bathrooms but they seemed fine to us and about what one would expect in a pretty rural area of Mexico. (if you've not traveled outside the US and Canada, you should be aware that you are going to find a VERY wide and sometimes confusing/terrifying variety of bathroom facilities and plumbing in other areas of the world. Always carry some hand sanitizer and a bit of tissue or wet wipes in your bag)

This is a fairly small museum so I wouldn't plan for more than an hour or two, but it is definitely worth stopping in if you like museums, have interest in Mayan culture, or just want to chat with some friendly locals. We enjoyed it and would definitely go back if we found ourselves in Costa Maya again.
