We went with a small group to Lalocura and got a tour from the owner. It was a great experience and what he is doing to make the whole process ecological sustainable is amazing. The tasting after the tour has been great as well. We got to taste many different mezcals with a variety of flavours. Definitely recommend going there.

If you love a great story and tour, visit Lalocura. If you love supporting a multi-generational small business, visit Lalocura. And if you love all types of mezcal, you MUST visit Lalocura! The small town of Santa Catarina Minas is home to some of the most delicious mezcals that are still produced the same way they've done for many, many years.... and Lalocura's is one of the best mezcal producing families!

Although mostly in Spanish, our tour guide Katy did an amazing job teaching us about the different species of agave plants they use for their mezcal, how they harvest these agave plants and exactly how much time, effort and energy it takes to produce their small batches. SO MUCH! Oh yeah, and the whole caps off with a modest tasting of TWENTY different mezcals! Go in with an open mind & palette and you'll be amazed to learn just how different yet delicious they all are.

Easily my favorite part of my visit to Oaxaca.

We randomly wound up out here and walked onto the property and some of the workers pointed us to the tasting room. We passed on the the full tour but did a tasting with Eva, who was incredibly gracious given our terrible Spanish skills. She explained all of the various mezcal styles and we found several that stood out for their unique qualities. Cool farm and we also petted the dogs and goats even though everyone probably thought we were nuts. Definitely worth the trip.

Amazing learning experience and mezcal tasting. Exceeded it expectations. We were shown and told everything one could discover about ancestral mezcal making. Ancestral methods means there is no use of machinery.

We got 2h in depth excursión about maguey (18 types) in the land from the main farmer of the place Isaak.

It followed by a demostraron of each step of the process once maguey has matured and piña has been cut.

Afterwards we had a tasting of 13 mezcals!!!

We couldn't wish for more amazing discovery.

The tour cost us 300 pesos per person.
In the end we as well bought their incredible Tepeztate mezcal.

Tip. We took a taxi to come there, asked taxi men to wait for us and bring back. It costed us 1000 pesos and was essential for we finished at 7pm and there was no hope to get taxi in that small village.

Highly recommend to choose this trip instead of commercial paleques of Matatlan.

We did the tour and Eduardo (Lalo) the master mezcalero took us on and fun and very educational tour. I will never look or taste Mezcal the same. The tasting was incredible and very generous. I ended up buying the limit in transportable liquor to the states. Oaxaca is just extraordinary and being there during the beginning of Dia de Los Muertos celebration was awesome!!!

Amazing destilados by an amazing maestro -- one of the best day trips you could possibly take out of Oaxaca City if you're even the least bit interested in mezcal. Lalo will make you passionate about agave.

Had a great time with the tour and how knowledgeable our guides were. I'm a whiskey fan and have enjoyed the bourbon trail, so if you do the Ruta del Mezcal of Oaxaca... make sure this place is on your todo list!

Sustainable mezcal farm that uses circular farming. Started by “Lalo,” the pioneer in separating and studying multiple mezcal varieties. Uses ancient process (pre-Hispanic) for making mezcal. Uses hammers instead of animals to make mezcal. Mezcal tasting includes 14 different types that put quality over quantity.

Spent the afternoon touring the farm and learned how the best mezcal has been traditionally made for 2,500 years. Lalo is so passionate of his products and it shows. His varieties of mezcal are all phenomenal and I came home with several bottles!

By far one of the most iconic mezcal palenque in Santa Catarina Minas, the best quality, and variety, we have tours to this place and we just love, la locura, is an explosion to the palette, come on pay a visit an try your palate and find your mezcal, it is worthy...

An excellent experience.
This Palenque makes great mezcal.
The tour is really informative, the personal is well informed and very polite.
They let you try more than 10 kinds of mezcal, teaching you how to drink it and taste it.
I fully recommend visiting and doing the full tour.

Great to visit the Palenque and learn more about the clay pot distillation process, super welcoming team. Would recommend the degustation which is a really great way to discover the wide variety of their production. Super to also learn about their approach to agave farming and how they embrace regenerative practices.

There may be many mezcales but Lalocura is far above the best. The mezcal is prepared in traditional processes that we call organic. This is the way these folks have always prepared it. The agave plants are extremely rare and can't be found anywhere in the world. In some cases occurring only every 20-30 years.

The location itself is rustic, but the family treats you like their own. Clean washrooms, uneven ground so wear good walking shoes. Lots of animals and bugs as expected in a working mezcal Palenque. Lots of smells.

Been there about 5 times, first time eating there excelente food. Ridiculously low prices if you know about mezcales.

Incredible mezcal and incredible people with a true passion for their craft. The tour of the farm and distillery was very enlightening and a good test of my Spanish 😂 Cannot recommend highly enough.

This has to be the best mezcaleria in Oaxaca. This mezcaleria is a must if your new to mezcal or want to know the real roots where mezcal came from. This mezcaleria is all organic from first steps till the last. I was born in oaxaca and had a different perspective about mezcal. Didn't like that smokey taste of it. Little did I know that smokey taste of it, it's poor handling of the mezcal when it's been made. It's like an hr away from oaxaca city. But it's a tour that you won't ever forget! The Mezcal is the best!!!!

A working mezcaleria that also gives tours. Just drive up and park and ask someone for a tour, the mezcaleria maestro will give tours and a tasting for a very small fee. He showed us the various types of agaves they had on the property, then how they bake them, ferment them, and distill them, accompanied by samples of cooked agave, fermented agave, and once and twice distilled agave. The plants, oven, fermentation vats and distillers are all right next to each other and also all shaded. After samples of seven or so mezcals we ordered a bottle and he filled it up and labelled it for us on the spot.

This is a working mezcaleria, and the maestro seems passionate about handmaking everything as traditionally as possible, even handmaking much of the distillers and the oven.

The mezcal was good too. Overall, a great tour.

A true Mezcalero Lalo himself shows where he makes the mezcal and let’s you taste the mezcal it’s all small batch mezcal made the way it’s been made for centuries. Lalo and his Mezcal are a real treasure.

Great Mezcal, beatiful palenque, and one of the most entertaining hosts you'll find in Oaxaca. Visit, taste, and bring some home.
