Lielstraupe Castle

Open as a museum now, cheap entry. Very kind guide, a lot to see. We were able to check almost every single room. It's definitely worth visiting if you're a fan of old hospitals, etc.

When I think of a castle, Lielstraupe is pretty close to the castle I’d picture. Sadly I was only able to visit in the morning, and explore the grounds in the morning dusk. The grounds were open but none of the buildings were at 8am.

This place is a fun maze. For 4 euros, you can explore almost all parts of the castle and the whole complex. You can go up to the tower and get nice views of the surroundings. The staff is friendly and love to talk about the history of this place. Be aware, this place might provoke uneasy or sad feelings- especially the basement. This place was a clinc for alcoholics and narcotics adicts until 2017. You can also buy suveniers and get some turism leaflets here. Would visit again!

What a delightful castle to visit, completely unlike any other tour and any other castle I've experienced. Our guide, a charming young lady, spent a full hour showing us around. If you're expecting a cute, fully renovated castle, think again...this place was a rehab center for alcoholics and is pretty rough. Super interesting though and even more interesting that an American claims to own this place. I recommend it!

A great opportunity to explore a historic site, that up until 2018 was an addiction medical center. A bit spooky and full of character. I recommend going to the top of the tower.

Smallest Hansa town fortress. Well preserved with remains of the hospital. Makes it perfect for horror movies ))) you can climb to the top as well.

It's absolutely amazing. You get to walk through the rooms freely and learn about the property.

Amazing, can explore all of it on your own and it has only symbolic entry fee. Would go again

Wonderful castle. Only one in Latvia that has a church within the castle, very unique.

There is much to discover here. This castle and church have great potential to become famous. Power!

Always beautiful chances to take great photos

All buildings freely available for visitors. Unique experience. Sort of horror movie. Labyrinth of corridors and rooms. Artefacts from psychiatric asylum times. It is going to be a jewel one day, needs just some funds.

Great place to visit. It is the smallest Hansa city, but with interesting history. Castle even is not restored, still is keeping interesting history, especially from hospital times. (Narcologic). Very competent local guides.

Very cool place and great guide, this castle was 3 years ago hospital for alcoholism and now it is great museum.

Amazing place for a short stop!

We were just driving through and stumbled upon this place. It seems untouched and quite lovely. We walked around the grounds and had a look inside th he church. This is free!
