It is a large steel bridge which connects two villages over Uma Oya which is made in 1919 August by British when they were ruling Sri Lanka. The brdge has three spans and length was 372ft, width was 8ft. All the beams and jots are steel and the pavement filled with wooden strips. The place is situated far away from the main roads.

“Halaba steel bridge” is constructed by British rulers to transfer their goods to their factories. This steel bridge found over “Uma oya” (river).

This is an ultimate spot for photography. Location of this bridge in a nature background annexes additional beauty to the photographs.

It’s hard to travel to this spot using large vehicles.

Halaba Steel Bridge

This unique bridge is located in a very remote location in Badulla District, about 10 km off Bogoda Wooden Bridge. The bridge is known as “Halaba Steel bridge” to the natives of this area, built across Uma-oya, connecting the areas of the present Hali-Ela Divisional secretariat and Uva-paranagama  Divisional secretariat. The first 8 km can be moved by a Motorcycle or tractor or perhaps by a four wheeled jeep with broad tires. But the next 2 km has to be walked on a foot or by a motorcycle.

The bridge is long 375 feet approximately, consisting three spans of about 129 feet, 121 feet respectively, built on two huge stone piers across the river. The most significant element of the bridge is the middle span of the bridge which is narrower than the other two spans erected on the ends. This is an iron bridge, with square framed entrance from both ends to the bridge. The iron frames of the entrance are 10 feet broad and the 10 feet high. These measurements remains up to the middle span of the bridge from both ends. I ❤ for this very special place... 😍😍😍

This is a very old iron bridge with a achialogical value. This long Bridge is constructed to cross the Uma oya river, hidden in the jungle closer to Haliela.srilanka.This is constructed to cross horse or bull carts ,and the middle section is narrowed to avoid elephants crossing the bridge. This must have been abandoned when the motor vehicular roads developed across Haliela Nuwaraeliya towns .

One of the hidden gems in Badulla District. It was built in 1914 by the British to safely travel across the Uma Oya in horseback. The construction of this bridge is very unique. It was done in three pieces to stabilize the structural integrity. It was constructed elsewhere, transported there and assembled.

This is a very old steel bridge built in the colonial period to move from Kandy to Badulla area. This is over the Uma Oya. Still this bridge is strong enough to bear a load of 120 people at a time because our team consisted of such number. The bridge is 375ft long and 6ft wide.

The bridge is erected in a very remote location in Badulla District, about 4 kilometers off Bogoda Wooden Bridge. The bridge is known as “Halaba Bridge” and also to known as ""Waradunu Palama/ වැරදුනු පාලම" by the natives of this area, built across Uma oya, connecting the areas of the present Hali Ela Divisional secretariat and Uva Paranagama Divisional secretariat. The first 3 kilometers can be moved by a tractor, three wheeler or perhaps by a four wheeled wehicle with broad tires. But the next kilometers has to be walked on a foot path passing two narrow iron bridges, built over Gallanda-oya and another small stream. The foot path leads up to the bridge through deep slopes and shrubs. This bank of the Uma Oya is Bogoda and the opposite bank of the river which communicate the bridge, leads to Bambarapane, Maspanna, Malagamuwa and some other villages.

Also this bridge can be accessed passing by Ketawala Junction via Hali Ela. The path is starting from the Ketawala Tea Factory, which was currently abandon and towards the straight to the Halaba village. Traveling 2.2 km on this road will bring you to the "Nikagolla" to "Ketawala" Road to the left. There will be a "T" junction after the first 3km and have to turn to right and about next 1km have to take left turn on "Y" shaped junction, which was a steep down road. The road is currently not paved with concrete or tar carpet and severely bad tough condition due to suspended road construction. Avoid if not accompanying with cars.

The bridge is approximately long 375 feet, consisting three spans of 129 feet, 121 feet respectively, built on two huge stone piers across the river. The most significant element of the bridge is the middle span of the bridge. The middle section is narrower than the other two spans erected on the ends. This is an iron bridge, with square framed entrance from both ends to the bridge. The iron frames of the entrance are 10 feet broad and the 10 feet high. These measurements remains up to the middle span of the bridge from both ends. But immediately after the first span the middle one is erected narrower than the first at 7 ½ feet broad but height remains as 10 feet. At the end of the middle span, again the bridge gets broader, measuring 10 feet broad and 10 feet high up to the end of the 3rd span. The platform is made of thick wooden logs which were fitted closely, accommodating to pass animals with lean legs. The girders of the bridge are connected with cross iron bars giving a quadrangle appearance to the entrance from both sides. The bridge is built at least 50 feet above the level of the river. When someone stands at the entrance from either side he could see the narrow portion of the middle like a beautiful four side cob-web. There is no other bridge has been founded in the island or any part of the word, making middle, narrow than the entrance. The notice embossed on the bridge has mentioned that the bridge was rebuild on 5th August 1919.

Halaba Steel Bridge
This bridge was built in British colonial period. It is situated in Uva Paranagama area in Badulla district. It can be accessed easily from the newly constructed road starting near the tea factory at Ketawala junction. Unlike the popular wooden bridge at nearby Bogoda this is not popular among tourists.
This mysterious bridge was built over Uma Oya but there is no connecting road from both sides. There are many assumptions about the origin of this bridge but nothing has proved yet.
We found a name plate fixed to the steel railing of the bridge with words ‘R. BROTHERHOOD, CHIPPENHAM WORKS, 1867’. When searched to internet we found it was belong to a railway constructing company CHIPPENHAM WORKS owned by Rowland Brotherhood who was a British civil engineer. Further the company was closed due to financial losses in 1869.
