Maduwanwela Walawwa is a historic mansion that showcases the legacy of a powerful clan in colonial Sri Lanka. The Walawwa has impressive mosaic floors, antique furniture, and a courthouse. It is a fascinating place to learn about the culture and history of the region. The Walawwa was built in the 1700s and expanded by Maduwanwela Maha Disawe, who was known as the Dark Prince of Ceylon.

This ancient bungalow and the building complex was built in 18th century and since was subject to continuous renovations under different regimes. Originally owned by an area-head under the king's rule. There's a court room where cases were heard and judged by the village head. The architecture, specially the mosaic art is fascinating. A nice example of the impact of colonial influence on country's constructions.

Recommended to spend at least 2 hours to get the full experience and cover the full complex.

Fascinating piece of architecture. A very good illustration of the rich society of ancient Ceylon. The walawwa in its full glory had consisted of 121 rooms and 21 courtyards. There has even been a room for mensuration period of females. 😅

The Maduwanwela family dates back to the 16th century. The peak of the family was during James Maduwanwela in 1844. Since the family did not have male descendants after his death in 1940, the premises was handed over to the Archaeological department in 1974.

There are no tickets and informational posters are placed around the premises. A visit here is highly recommended.

This is the bungalow of the local leader of this area around British ruling era. He acted against English and had good praise from the local people. This used to be a huge bungalow with over 100 rooms, but now a small portion of it remains. It’s informative and certainly worth a visit if you happen to be in the neighborhood. No entry tickets. A parking area is available but drive carefully from entrance to parking lot since the gravel road is in pretty bad state. Some officials from the archeological department are available there. Ask them for information, they’ll guide you. No point of just visiting without proper information on each section of the property. It take around 40 mins to complete the tour.

An ancient house with a proud historical story. Places are numbered and follow the numbers to get rid of missing anything.

There are two main roads to reach this place. From Embilipitiya road is the easiest and road condition is good. From Sooriyakanda road is very difficult but beautiful. If you're coming from the Embilipitiya road, don't forget to visit Panamure Elephant Kraal which is always connected with Maduwanwela Walawwa in ancient time.

Parking is available for 20-30 vehicles. No ticketings. Entrance free.

This majestic walawwa was built by Maduwanwela Maha Mohottala in 1700 AC in King Vinaladharmasooriya II 's reign.
A large building with it's own temple, a court of law, and hundreds of rooms of which today remains only few parts in it's original majestic condition.
The current walawwa also houses a small museum which concerns maduwanwala family details & property within it's premises.
