This small Buddhist temple which is on an island in the Madu River is a very calm place.
We had a personal boat, and it was a 2 hour river safari in which we covered this temple and one farm with local spices.
There are 2 cute giant squirrels living here who are very friendly.
Most of the boat rides which get from Madu River will visit this place.

Kothduwa Temple is a Buddhist temple situated in Kothduwa Island on the Madu River. The temple is believed to have sheltered the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha. It is a popular tourist destination due to its location on the Madu River which is rich in bio diversity, especially mangroves. The Bodhi tree in the temple grounds is a bud from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, which is believed to be the oldest human planted tree in the world. Access to the temple is by boat due to its location.

The Kothduwa temple, or Koth Duwa Raja Maha Viharaya, is a Buddhist temple located on Kothduwa Island on the Madu Ganga in southern Sri Lanka.
The island is located in Galle District of the Southern Province approximately 35 km (22 mi) north of Galle and 88 km (55 mi) south of Colombo.The temple is believed to have once sheltered the sacred relic of the tooth of the Buddha, circa 340 CE.
The Bodhi tree on the island was planted from a bud of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi by Deva Pathiraja, minister to King Parakramabahu IV. The temple and the island on which it is located both lie within the Maduganga Estuary. Kothduwa is one of 15 islands within the estuary. The biodiversity of the wetlands surrounding the temple is exceptional and 111 species of birds and 248 species of vertebrates have been recorded in the area. In 2006, the Department of Wildlife Conservation declared 2,600 hectares of the estuary a wildlife sanctuary.
In 2003, 915 hectares of the Maduganga Estuary was declared a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The estuary and the 15 islands within, including Kothduwa became Ramsar Site 1372.Access to the temple is by boat from Balapitiya, the nearest large town.The temple also operates its own boat for the purposes of running the temple, although it is sometimes used to pick up visitors.
Those wishing to be collected by the temple boat should sound the horn and flash the headlights of their vehicle, from the access road on the mainland shore nearest the island.

A historic old temple in the middle of Madu river. Quite peaceful surrounding. Serene atmosphere and loved the energy. A must go place if you wish to receive some blessings when your around the corner.

Important : Google map suggest multiple roads based on you location. But unless otherwise if you are traveling by four wheel vehicle, always goose “uragaha-ahungalle” road directly from galle road.

We’ve visited this temple during river safari. Came already on sunset and were alone on the island. There is giant squirrel living on the island. Loves bananas a lot. Young monk made a little excursion at the temple and answered a few questions about Buddhism.

It is nice and calm place. Only the the temple all the island. If you travel this place defanitely you arrange a boat. Bcz we can go there only a boat. Very clean place. And plz if you go there don't put litters. We must protect our places.

The Kothduwa Purana Raja Maha Viharaya is an esoteric hideway. Nestled in the Madhu Ganga in the Balapitiya electorate, it is the only temple inside a river without a village flanking it. The only access to the venue is through the river and that too by motor boat, which is, more often than not, navigated by a Buddhist priest !!
