I travelled to Sri Lanka using IVHQ.
The orientation week in Sri Lanka was such an amazing and outstanding experience which was provided by Green Lion. On arriving into the country I was worried about the current situation as I arrived shortly after the Easter Bombings in 2019. However the news could not be more wrong about the Country. The country is extremely safe and everyone is well protected.
My favourite parts were learning all about the culture, Buddhism, learning to cook Sri Lanka food, learning the language and visiting many historical sites and temples. Green Lion went above and beyond in our stay offering extra activities we felt we wanted to complete in our time in Sri Lanka. Green Lion staff also supported during our travels away from camp ensuring that we had arrived safe, knew what we were doing while away from camp and also making sure we arrived back safe. I have never felt so at home. The food was delicious and well prepared! Also more than enough to go around! The food that was prepared for me at the Green Lion was amazing and we always had food available to us when we wanted and even Tea/ Coffee. A huge thank you to the cook, Hermantha, Chandra and AJ for making my orientation week so special and enjoyable.
The orientation week with Green Lion is a must!
After my orientation week I was sent to the Wild Elephant Conservation Society in Wasgamuwa. On arrival I was made to feel right at home and Lunch was all ready and waiting for me after my long journey from Kandy.
Nisali Wijesinghe and Chathuranga Dharmarathne provided and outstanding orientation to the program and helped me understand what was to be expected in the week ahead. I really enjoyed the Elephant program taking part in the orange tree project by weeding existing orange trees, fence monitoring, Elephant tracking, community support with stolen crops and broken houses, dung analysis.
My favourite parts of the program were extras that the team organised for us, early morning walk to bird watch, a morning cup of tea in the jungle with the Elephant to help support their new sponsor Elephantea, the Team also arranged for us to go to the National Park! It was amazing how up close and personal we got with the Elephants! If you are travelling for less than 2 weeks please know that the National Park will come at a cost of 2000RS.
During my time in Sri Lanka the SLWCS supported me in becoming a Buddhist. This occasion was a big part of my life and it was outstanding that the Elephant Conservation team all supported me learning, understanding and knowing what to do to achieve this dream.
I can honestly put my hand on my heard and say both the Green Lion and SLWCS were both outstanding and the current Country status is nothing to be fearful of when travelling to Sri Lanka. The country is safe and all programs are running as normal. All teams in Sri Lanka are going above and beyond to ensure that you can still travel across Sri Lanka during free time knowing exactly where to go and how to stay safe. There is a lot of forces presence in the Country and the Country has never been safer. The culture and the people in Sri Lanka are all very kind, genuine and always want to help foreign travelers. Unlike other culture where they just want to sell you stuff. The Sri Lankan community are kind, caring and compassionate towards ensuring everyone feels at home.
Overall this experience has changed my life for the better and I have learnt a lot not just about myself but another Country, Culture and met friends for life.
Get yourself to Sri Lanka and experience this amazing Country.
