Excellent place for day tour. Autumn is possibly the best time to visit. Rocks, beautiful river, quiet nature, ancient Buddah inscriptions.

Also, on the way visit sand dunes of Kapchagai Lake and Soviet retro cars private museum. Must-visit place - just 70 kilometers from Almaty. Last 10 kilometers is off-road trip. Entrance - 3 000 tenge from a car.

Take some snacks for the road, there is no any infrastructure on Tamgaly Tas. But on the way back there are several nice road caffe. I recommend one which is located next to Retro cars museum.

Road is good till left turn to Tamgaly Tas, there are plenty of self made off-roads in the step, but don’t turn left until you see tragic sign “Tamgsly tas”, it is the shortest off-road to reach the place. Since mobile network doesn’t work it is recommended to download offline map if the region so you can follow thru GPS. Don’t forget cash, entrance is paid cash only 500 tenge, around 1,5 $ per person also cars are allowed upon separate payment (as far as I understood). There are area with mountains where you can see petroglyphs and it is amazing. Plenty of youngsters are climbing and training there. There are some sitting benches and areas for picnicking. Ili river in all its glory in front of you, views are incredible. Highly recommended to go, just 40 min from Konayev city. On the road don’t overspeed plenty of police cars on the road.

Atmospheric, remote Buddhist and Bronze-age petroglyphs. Don’t stop after the big three boddhisatvas - there are additional writings and petroglyphs further on. Whole visit should take you about 30 minutes; or, if the weather is good, bring a picnic to enjoy in this beautiful, quiet place. The drive from Almaty takes about an hour and a half. Expect to lose cell service after Kapchagai. We managed the 8 kilometer drive to the site on bumpy dirt roads in a Honda CR-V, but were nervous the whole way. Bring water just in case.

Amazing! 100% worth the trip. Don't even think about it if you don't have a 4 wheel drive. Really. I'm not joking. Also, there aren't any signs or anything while you're there so look around a lot or you might miss some some cool stuff. There are more petroglyphs than you might think at first. I think a lot of people just see the big Buddha and then leave. There's still the super cool alien looking thing and mi favorite, the kitty cat. Don't miss out!

The internet says that if you go on up the road you can find a boat that will take you across the river to the movie set of the Nomad. Well....um.....we walked forever... We found the movie set....we were directly across from it....but we never found any boat to take us across. Now I'm not saying the boat doesn't exist....I'm just saying go at your own risk. Maybe it's there. Maybe we gave up too soon. We were tired and hungry. If you find the boat I'd really like you to respond to this and let me know.

Clean and fresh air. There is Ile river, which is perfect for hot days.

Very nice builder place, beautiful panorama to the Illi river.

On the east bank of Ile River, north of Kapchagay, Tamgaly-Tas petroglyph site bearing rock carvings of Buddhist deities, Tibetan and Oirat inscriptions of prayer texts and mantras dated 17th century are quite interesting to see if you can spare time during your visit to Almaty area. There are also new images from 1950 to 70's on the southern part of the cliffs, used in cinematographic filming which do not bear historical heritage.

In addition, just across the river on the south-west bank, could also visit Krepost Nomad; a movie set built to replicate a traditional fortified Central Asian nomad city. Apparently, most historical period movies of the region are shot here...

Historical place

Прекраснейшее место. Скалы, река, природа, петроглифы. Перед воротами есть парковка, въезд на территорию платный (3 тыс с машины), туалет есть платный за 100 тенге, а есть бесплатные а-ля колхоз. Можно приезжать с палатками, ставить можно до въезда в ворота. Можно скалолазить, можно просто погулять, посмотреть на петроглифы, можно полюбоваться рекой. Для любителей природы - красота. Еду и воду привозите с собой.

Удивительной красоты место, есть места для отдыха, туалеты. Вход 500 тенге. Отличное место для прогулки в выходной день
