a very favorable holy burial place of Arystan Baba, a place of strength and finding spiritual peace, I advise you to visit this place. Here lies a holy man who went down in history and was revered during his lifetime. Anyone who wants happiness and peace in life should definitely visit here.

The only preserved part of the mausoleum are the wooden columns, though it is not 100%. The rest of the building was restored several times. Last time russians did it, bringing their own style to the mausoleum.

Mausoleum of a saint. Too bad we weren't there on a Thursday. Apparently pilgrims sleep there on Thursday nights. That's what Wikipedia says at least. The tourist police officer was very excited when we told him we were American and wanted a picture with us. Of course I insisted on getting one with my phone too. We just spent an entire month traveling Uzbekistan that's supposedly a much more conservative country than Kazakhstan, but this was the first place I've encountered in 5 weeks that insisted I cover my head.

The 2nd Mecca. I was there, I am still lost for words. Must visit for all muslims and even if you are of another religion. There are remains of Sultan Beibars also brought from Egypt. Duahs.

The second place you have to visit during your stay in Turkestan. One of the great Muslim center of spirit. It is 60 km from the town, the road takes one hours. You can order private car or join the local travel bus. No guide is inside.

The tomb and mausoleum of Arystan Bab (Arslan Baba in Turkish, Arslan meaning The Lion) who was the first murshid/teacher of Khoja Ahmad Yasawi (Ahmet Yesevi, 1093–1166), a Turkic poet and Sufi, an early mystic who exerted a powerful influence on the development of Sufi orders throughout the Turkic-speaking world. A Turkic heartfelt dervish thought to be from the nearby ancient city of Otrar, Arslan Baba said that "Every human being is like a tree carrying inside a gem. To reveal that gem, it must be chipped and any excess discarded".

A legend states that Emir Timur ordered the construction of a mosque on the site of Ahmet Yesevi's grave İn Türkistan but all attempts were unsuccessful. Timur was then told in a dream that in order to have success, he should first build a mausoleum over the grave of religious mystic, Arslan Baba, the murshid of Yesevi.

The mausoleum dates back to 14th century and is constructed over Arslan Baba's 12th century grave, but was reconstructed several times up to 18th century. In 18th century, the previous mausoleum, which had been destroyed by an earthquake was replaced with a double-domed structure supported by two carved wooden columns. Most of the current structure was constructed in the first decade of the 20th century with only the carved wooden pillars, remaining from the original building.

The mausoleum features a large central arch and wide front facade with minarets at the ends and two large domes to the left of the main arch. As well as the two-chambered table-tomb (gurkhana) of Arystan Bab and three of his students, Hermet-Azyra, Karga-Baba and Lashyn-Baba, a mosque and auxiliary quarters and museum are located in the other rooms of the mausoleum. The effect of high groundwater levels led to the mosque being demolished and rebuilt in 1971. A Quran showing medieval calligraphy is displayed under glass here.

The mausoleum today is a place of pilgrimage. Must see if you are in Türkistan together with the ancient city of Otrartobe (where Timur died in 1405 before his expedition to China) and Mausoleum of Hoca Ahmet Yesevi...
