Rockwood Hotel & Spa

Our favorite ski resort but sadly becoming increasingly popular, and no longer a hidden gem. Very good breakfast and dinner buffet, especially the desserts at night. I blame the hotel for adding a few inches to my waistline despite all the skiing.

We had a fantastic trip in February staying at Rockwood Hotel at Aomori Spring. The hotel has been even further updated from our last visit, and it’s great.
Normally, I am wary of buffets, but the food at Rockwood Hall is really tasty and varied. Both breakfast and dinner are served buffet style (or you can dine in style in the bistro with expansive views of mountains and the Sea of Japan). There is a huge choice of both Japanese (including sushi/sashimi) and Western food, so there is something for everyone. The place is kept super clean, and the staff members are all very willing to help (language barriers aside!).
We were lucky to stay in one of the new junior suites, which are very spacious and beautifully furnished. Everything looks modern and expensive. There is a huge leather sofa and some comfortable arm chairs - perfect for lounging, entertaining and watching the giant smart tv. We brought some films on a USB flash drive and had a proper movie night in. One night we had some drinks at the bar and played pool. Another time we had a ping pong challenge, while some of the others played the Wii and Xbox games in the game room. There are tons of other things to do, like relaxing in the indoor and outdoor onsen (natural hot spring), hitting the gym, karaoke room and you can even book a session with a professional masseuse (fantastic).
As for the snow – it was amazing! There are hardly any lines for the lifts and there are plenty of runs so that you don’t feel crowded or constrained . You can ski right up to the hotel and right down to the lifts. It’s very chilled. They even have a full sized half pipe if you’re brave enough to try it. The number one snowboarder in the World happened to be training while we there. There are photos and videos throughout the hotel lobby of the many top athletes/Olympians who have trained and visited Aomori Spring, which is pretty cool. Highly recommended.

Rockwood Hotel & Spa lived up to its good name! AMAZING service. All the staff went above and beyond in helping us with any of our questions or travel needs. The resort itself is very neat and tidy with rooms that have fantastic views. The food was outstanding and always very tasty, with a good variety of western dishes and traditional Japanese options. Would highly recommend this resort for anyone looking for a quiet relaxing stay.

A shout out to our back country guide Kenji! You can book Kenji through Rookwood hotel. He is a fantastic guide who has years of knowledge of the mountain and rescue experience. We had an exceptional time with Kenji and can not recommend him enough.

Fantastic snow and great food! Rockwood is great - you can ski right up to the hotel and safely leave your things in the convenient lockers provided while you have a drink at the bar, eat at one of the restaurants, or visit the spa (natural hot springs in the hotel - both indoor and open air). Fun karaoke facilities, too. The rooms have huge windows, so you get a panoramic view of the mountains. Highly recommended.

Superb powder! Good selection of easy runs for beginners to practice and experience powder on. Foreigners are welcome, not too difficult to navigate. Hotel rates a very reasonably priced and the rooms are good quality and clean.

The runs are not too packed and very wide! A couple of Chinese tourist but still overall experience is amazing.

The onsen is 👍👍👍

Great ski in ski out hotel with designed and huge intenal space, high CP rate, high quality steak in dinner time, fresh crap as well. Definitly should go! strongly recommend!
