日向廃寺跡は平安時代から鎌倉時代にかけての浄土庭園を伴う寺院跡です。
筑波山花崗岩の礎石列と焼土を検出、主殿の両翼に回廊を伴う平等院風の阿弥陀堂建築で、火災で焼亡したことがわかっています。
当時筑波山麓では、大掾多気義幹が勢力を持っており建立者は多気氏によるものと推定されています。
全宗寺は多気太郎義幹の開基で天台宗でしたが、呑海上人がこの寺を訪れ、多気太郎を供養するとともに寺を時宗に改めました。
境内にある天満宮は、雨乞いの神として信仰厚く、昭和の初期まで雨乞いが行われていたということです。
