Highly informative and comprehensive history of Hokkaido.
Covers everything from the local fauna to modern history of both the Ainu and the Japanese. Quite a decent chunk of the museum is in English for those who need it as well.
One of the best prefectural museums in the country, well worth the visit.
Took about 4 hours to go through, although I was quite thorough.

This is a wonderful museum, would recommend to anyone visiting Hokkaido. The open air museum is also worth a visit. Even with the cold, it was very interesting and the autumn leaves made for a beautiful visit.

I wish I had the time to go into the bug section. They had an incredible display but because i was with a group, i couldn't wait in line to go in. I recommend to go there first upon arrival. Beautiful place and rich collection of various historical items. Well put together.

Beautiful place in winter as the snow is clean and untouched 😁
Since the bus comes out twice per hour, one can kill time by playing the snow while waiting 😃
Exhibit are interesting with sufficient English translations. There's a cafe and souvenir shop at the entrance.

Learnt a lot about the history of Hokkaido from the wildlife to it's landscape and people. Some of the displays were interactive and we were allowed to touch and feel them. For me there was a lot to see. I also downloaded their app which was also helpful! I could spend the whole day here.

A fun indoor outing to keep warm from all the snow! We spent about 1.5-2 hours here and took the train from Sapporo station then a bus. It was not difficult to navigate using google maps.

One of the best museums for focus on Japanese anthropology. Not so much for anything else but that doesnt take away from the museum quality

Fantastic museum that taught from thousands of years ago right through to the development of Hokkaido and the Ainu to modern day. This was very English friendly and even though we couldn't read some plaque my partner and I still got a lot out of it.

Very interesting displays of the history of hokkaido and its people. Complementary app gives you details about pieces in others languages if you don't speak Japanese.

This museum is not only beautiful it is one of the coolest things I did in Sapporo! It gives an in-depth look at traditional Hokkaido cultures.

Not to mention the museum itself is beautiful during winter.

The museum was built in the 70's but has a modern interior and interactive presentation of the contents. You can learn the story of how the settlement in Hokkaido was first established until the modern age development. I especially like their presentation on Ainu culture, as the indigenous people of the island. Definitely a must visit place for those coming to Hokkaido.

A small but fantastic museum on Hokkaido's history. The displays are modern and well presented so anyone, especially kids, can understand what is going on. The circle of life type area would be particularly fun for kids with taxidermied animals presented in a way that's friendly and not freaky as with some museums. We did the museum in about 75 minutes but could spend longer if you like to read everything. Enough English to know whats happening. I recommend the Sapporo Select ticket Course B to get entry to this museum and 2 other locations from a short list (including nearby Hokkaido Historical Village).
