This mysterious, natural work of art, featuring a straight line of large and small unusually shaped rocks which stretches for around 850 meters, appears to be the stakes of a bridge. The fantastic scenery colored by the sunrise is especially popular as a photo-taking spot. One legend says that the monk Kobo Daishi attempted to build a bridge here.

Interesting factoid: Some 14 million years ago a massive volcanic eruption sent piping hot magma into the sea just off the shore of what is today Kushimoto. The magma settled in cracks of the underwater sedimentary rock where it coagulated. Eventually, tectonic activity caused an upthrust of the ocean floor, shooting massive rocks hundreds of feet in the air. Over time, the wind and sea eroded the softer sedimentary rock, leaving the hard igneous rock behind. In this sense the Hashigui-iwa are never the same, as the elements continue to form and shape them.

Free parking is available.

Came here on a weekend afternoon. 3.30pm in December means it's almost sunset 🌆 and the low light and clear skies made for some wonderful 👍 photos, especially at low tide 🌊 when the reflection 🪞 pooling in the shallows creates excellent photoshoot opportunities.

With a rest station cleverly situated right at the edge of the beach ⛱ with a full view of the Hashiguiiwa rocks, it's a perfect place to spend up to an hour. The mascot here is an ogre 👹 which is practically adorable 🥰 too.

Writeups located along the beach are informative and help explain the rock formations. Mostly local tourists and bikers making a pit stop 🚏 along the coastal route.

Hashiguiiwa Rocks is a fascinating place and worth a stop. In fact we actually stayed there for a long time as it was low tide and we walked all the way to the huge rock and could appreciate the awesome geological formation. But do wear proper hiking boots as there are various spots that are slippery.

Amazing view of rocks on the shore.

Located near Kushimoto station. There is a free piblic parking just infront of it. Public restrooms are also available.

On the other side of the street is resturants and quick bites.

In Wakayama Prefecture, the Hashiguiiwa Rocks are essentially magma that has piled up from underground from 15 million years ago, making this rather unique geologic formation and tourist attraction. We stayed here about an hour because of the cool sea breeze, plus there is an ice cream 🍨 shop in the building next to the rocks. Go in spring or fall. Summer is too hot in Japan.

This hugely popular place is worth the visit. It definitely looks more grand than from the photos. You can also walk amongst the rocks though do take care and also be kind to the sea creatures as we found some small ones residing in its midst.

Beautiful and interesting rocks that you can walk up to during low tide. I think the best time to visit is for sunrise if you can time it right.

If you are taking the train, I recommend getting off at Kushimoto station instead of Kii-Hime station, which is pretty impossible to reach by foot (Hashiguwa rocks is about equal distance between the 2 stations). It's probably best accessed by car/bus.

Really cool spot with tide pools and rock formations. Worth a stop if you're driving by or staying at a resort in the area.

Happened to pass by, saw the beautiful rocks n made a stop. Gorgeous! A family was catching crabs, and greeted us warmly, allowing us a look at their catch.

The tangerine ice cream is a must-try!

Worth seeing this attraction if you have car to go there. The rocks are broken down by tsunami and form an attraction there.

During low tide time, you may walk closer to the rocks for photos.

There are plenty of parking space and the turnover is high, waiting for few minutes can get a free space.
