Small but very beautiful castle. You can view the entire Kakegawa from the castle keep. On a clear day you can have a glimpse of Mt Fuji.
Highly recommended for visiting the castle since its just a few blocks from the station.

Amazing historical place.
The staff at the top level of the castle told us many interesting stories about those buildings, old times, historic periods, etc.
Highly recommended to visit.

Lovely little castle in a lovely little city.

The tour of the castle is very nice, and the tour of the lord's manor was wonderful, with a bunch of historic artefacts.

Ninja tour guides!!! On the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month Ninja tour guides will be there to guide you through the castle and it's history. Beautiful castle. The castle itself is a recreatiom but there is a palace next to it that is more than 400 years old.

Kakegawa castle was built about 500 years ago by Yoshitada Imagawa who was the load (daimyo) governing this area during the civil war era.
After the Imagawa family lost power due to territorial disputes, Kakegawa castle was the home of Load Yamauchi Kazutoyo and his unpretentious wife Chiyo, who was known for supporting her husband in battles. It was him who built the first castle tower (Tenshkaku) of Kakegawa castle.
In 1603 when Edo period began, the Kakegawa castle greatly flourished. Unfortunately most of the castle was destroyed in the big earthquake of 1854 and collapsed in 1869.
It was restored in 1994 and remains as the symbol of Kakegawa City. It is the first castle in Japan to be rebuilt with wood.

Looking at the castle tower from the 9th floor of the hotel in Kakegawa, it really is the best angle, you can enjoy the whole view of it surrounded by mountains, so beautiful!! Kakegawa Castle was completed in 1590 AD and took 10 years to complete it.

Not an original castle keep tower but it is a very nice place to visit. Everything is just balanced. The rebuilt is of wood, very close to original, the park is comfortable, and there is an original palace hall. Came in Sakura season and it was really beautiful.

This little castle tower is worth the visit. I went in January, and it was very quiet. The staff was exceptionally friendly and explained everything to me in great detail, (in Japanese, but English pamphlets and guides are handed out at the entrance) making the visit very educational. The castle complex is in exceptionally good condition.

It is worth visiting the palace below the castle tower as well as the tea house, where you are served sweets and matcha while admiring the beautiful view. The Takenomaru building was alright, but the garden was very pretty, which would likely be much more interesting in warmer seasons.

I recommend a pass for all parts of the castle complex, and to take at least half a day to explore everything at a comfortable place. (The stained glass museum is the only part not included in this pass and must be purchased separately.)

Overall a nice place that's worth visiting and not completely overrun by tourists.

Visiting this place will give you a glimpse of how the Edo period lifestyle was. Would I endure their days when modern devices were not invented yet? Thanks for the modern science!

A gourgoes litthe castle underway. Wat really struck me was the grave of Gijsbert Hemmy, the last dutch chief of Deshima who died there in the late 1700's. A remarkable place.
