菊池武重公が京から連れて帰ってきた本山因幡入道明受の孫・宗矩は、菊池兼朝公の娘を妻としました。その長男明徳は空心と称し、1505年にこのお寺を開いたとされます。「正光山」の由来は、空心の祖先が正光寺城に一時期居城していたからという説があります。
