Peace Tower

I went on a really hot day after checking out the takatsuki observation deck. The entrance is a bit hard to locate (or maybe it was so hot i didn't notice) so make sure to look around. i didn't see it on the way up. The monument is nice, showcasing the people who lost their lives on the island. Most of them were inhabitants of Zamami village. It’s quite a bit of a climb up but worth it.

Little known area but worth the hike. Before US forces invaded Okinawa during WW2 they invaded zamami jima first. Worth the hike up - great view of the harbor!

A very quiet and peaceful shrine in the forest on the side of the road. The Allies invaded this island first during The Battle of Okinawa. A lot of people died. RIP.

住民に対する集団自決の強制があった事実を知りませんでした。教科書レベルの知識でこの歳まで生きてきた事、恥いる次第です。御冥福をお祈りします。

少し登ります。
階段の幅が狭く、石畳なのでスニーカーは必須です。雨の日は避けた方がいいです。途中で草や枝にも当たります。体力に自信のある方は大丈夫だと思います。

個人的に座間味島で1番印象に残った場所ですので、おすすめです。

座間味村での戦闘で亡くなられた軍民1200人余りが祀られている。合掌。

港から徒歩圏内１０分満たないくらいか。アスファルト舗装の道路から入った所にある。少し山を登る。

村役場に「座間味村戦跡地ガイド」があるので、その冊子を一読してから訪問すると、この島への印象が変わると思います。ケラマブルーに米軍の戦艦、今となっては想像もつきません。

沖縄戦の慰霊碑

1945年3月26日連合軍は、座間味諸島から沖縄上陸作戦を開始した。東京大空襲の半月後、広島に原爆が投下される5ヵ月前の事だ。座間味島では402名の島民が集団自決する悲劇が起きた。この慰霊碑は、平和を願う島民によって建てられたもので、塔を囲む石板には戦争で犠牲となった住民・軍人1,302人の氏名が刻まれている。
