旧米澤（米沢)街道の途中の集落。郵便局が有るくらいですから、少し昔は栄えていたのでしょう。今でこそ国道459号があるけど、前はこの狭い道が生活道路だったのですね。

近くに、桧原温泉なるものが有るのですが、個人宅の敷地にあり、誰もいないので入れなかった。

会津方面から中の七里峠を経て米沢に至る旧街道。桧原宿は明治の磐梯山噴火により桧原湖底に沈み街道は寸断。ここから長井川沿いの旧街道を経て桧原峠を超え米沢に至る。
