Was definitely worth the visit, it is on top a very beautiful mountain, with an incredible view. Its ruins aren’t in the best condition but you can still walk around the site and enter the remains of the castle. I really enjoy visiting historical sites so for me this was lots of fun. The scenery was also very beautiful. If you like the same thing I would definitely recommend visiting this castle.

Built in 1115 AD by Baldwin I, the king of Jordan. It was built on the crown of a hill for two reasons: 1) extend the area of Frankish settlement east of the Dead Sea, and 2) control the road between Syria, the Red Sea, and Egypt. At its peak, 6,000 people lived in the castle.

This impressive Crusader castle was built by Baldwin I of Jerusalem in 1115 and was originally called 'Krak de Montreal' or 'Mons Regalis', so-named in honor of the king's contribution to its construction (Mont Royal). In its heyday, about 6000 people resided in the castle. It was attacked several times by Saladin and finally fell to him in 1189 after a two-year siege. The Mamluks later restored the castle in the 14th century.

Place must visit in Jordan.

Beautiful castle ruins. It is a 10 min walk from the parking lot but they also offer a golf cart transfer it you struggle to walk. It wasn’t crowded at all when we were there so we had the place all for ourselves. It is included in the Jordan pass so it’s a must visit if you’re nearby

This is a beautiful crusaders castle that was expanded by the Mamluks on the Eastern side of the Arabah valley, perched on the side of a rocky conical mountain, looking out over fruit orchards below. The ruins are located next to the modern town of Shobak in Jordan.
Unlike other castles in our country it still needs a lot of restoration as many parts of it are not accessible to visitors and tourists. Definitely worth the visit if you’re in the south

A very beautiful place worth seeing. The cost of the ticket is only one Jordanian dinar and there are small golf cars available for three Jordanian dinars. They will take you to the castle above and take you back to the visitor center.
It is recommended to buy jordan pass

Good stop to break the drive up when we were heading north to Karak from Aqaba. Seems like tour buses do the same thing so there could be a big load of tourists occasionally but they also disappear quickly. We were lucky to have the castle to ourselves most of the time. It’s nice to wander thru the castle to visit the many rooms, we had a guide but didn’t get too much information out of him except what each of the rooms were likely used for and some water sources. We compared notes with other tourists we met later on and it seems like the things our guides told us did not always match.

Interesting location with a deep and complex history that if placed anywhere in Europe would be crawling with tourists. The castle is still in a rough and ready state and you really do need to watch your step. Nonetheless, the influence of many different civilizations over thousands of years is evident and the views of the surrounding region are spectacular.

Hilltop castle/ruins built by the crusaders around 1100AD. Ongoing restoration so many areas has no access. Be prepared to walk uphill, good shoes needed. Not currently wheelchair friendly. Golfcart transport is available from the Information centre to the castle at a fee. Not recommended for small children.

Shoback Castle is on the Royal Mountain, not Montreal (which was sourced from French Mont Royal) that is in Canada.
Well preserved from 1115 Crusaders time with some walls still standing.
Keep in mind that there is a long stiff uphill walk to get to the entrance.

This castle is not very big - it takes around 1 hour to walk around and also do the "secret" tunnel. The castle itself is nothing very special - it's mostly in ruins and there is not much to see in the structure itself. But, the views from the top all-around are spectacular. The landscape is interesting - the land looks like it is flowing up and down around the castle. Even the views of the castle as you approach it are very good. For us the most fun part was going through a hidden tunnel (apparently there are many) that took us from the castle to the road below. It was a pretty tight place, completely dark, slippery in places, full of dust and we were crouching most of the time, but we had fun, little scary but fun :-).

Great massive ruins of a castle. Really makes you wonder how it looked like in it's time... you can make a trip there from Wadi Musa with a driver for 30JD (he will wait for you); whole trip takes about 3 hours then.

Amazing hilltop location, mostly in ruins, but well worth the visit. A long walk up from the visitor center, but you can ask to drive up. Great views over the surrounding area.

Very interesting castle with few tourists. You can park upstairs and not walk up from visitor centre. On left side is entrance to hidden path.

An absolutely fantastic place to visit. You can spend an hour or even half a day. The view from the top of the ruins is just awesome. Take a minibus from Petra, it's the shortest distance, rather than from Amman.

Wonderful views from this historic castle. Local area is stunning with open viewing or local guides. Care must be taken if you are thinking of taking children here as there are many hazards.

The castle is perched on a rocky hill overlooking the surrounding landscape, and is constructed primarily out of local limestone. It is surrounded by a deep moat and a series of walls and towers that would have made it difficult for attackers to breach.

Shobak Castle played an important role in the Crusades, and was the site of numerous battles and sieges over the years. It changed hands multiple times between the Crusaders and the Muslim armies, and was eventually abandoned in the 14th century as the balance of power in the region shifted away from the Crusaders.

This is a castle well worth visiting. It does not appear to be a heavily visited attraction in Jordan, which actually makes it all the more attractive. You have plenty of time and space to explore. It is located in the Northern part of the quaint city of Shobak.
