Very old temple fully built during the Chola Era. But the rock temple was initially built by the Pandya King, then expanded by Cholas, Pallavas and Naickas. Beautiful Architecture. Lord Shiva resides here as Shikageereeswarar and Ambal as Akhilandeswari. The Mountain rock carved Shivling must be more than 2000 years old. Ultimate marvel. This area is locked and kept. Standing near the Guru, If You look up the mountain, You can see Parameshwar and Parvathi sitting on Nandi, flanked on both sides by 64 Nayanmaars. Beautiful carvings at that height. A must visit for all Hindus and Art lovers. This temple is maintained by ASI

A Wonderful Ancient Temple That Belongs to 7th Century AD, A Monument and A Place of worship that preserves the Tradition and History of the Land...
The Shikhanathar Temple is Devoted to Lord Shiva, And was Built by the Pallavas,
This Temple has lots of Stone writings or scriptures in ancient Tamil script.
This is the Only Temple which has a preserved stone writing of the Saptha Swaras or the Musical Notes..
Truly Amazing and Devine

Lord Shiva having a "kudimi" in head leading to the place named as "kudimiyan malai". Place where we can see Pallava rock cut marvel, ASI official clearly explains, unlocks and shows us the ancient Shiva, Parvati temple, Pallava time Ganesha temple path is little inaccessible. Chola structure, then Pandiya style structure along with paintings, mostly gone, finally Nayaka structure in the front with wonderful single stone statues on either side pillars in the entrance. Really appreciate the ASI official presence and explanation. Mural paintings, rock cut sun shades, hexagon shaped hall where marriage of princes of royal family used to take place and now open to public to conduct marriage. Wonderful experience. Malik Kafur invasion has some bad memories with wonderful single pillar statues broken, most missing nose, hands and some head. Let's preserve what is left for the next generation.

This is an amazing temple with so many sculptures which I accidentally discovered from local people . I would say a must visit for the sheer architecture. The main diety is siva and located in the main temple as well as in the rock cave behind the temple. Beware of monkeys

Temple is located at the base of hill.
There are very interesting god and goddess idols inside.
One of the interesting thing which I haven't observed is the folding on sarees or other clothes are shown on the idols.
There is one more temple at the back just at foothills.
Ganesha idol is carved into the hill.
At one place in the roof Raashis (astrology signs) has been carved.

This temple has amazing sculpture work. Each pillar is engraved with one sculpture. Most remarkable is a temple which was sponsored by Devdasis. Traditional games are engraved on floor, and on the wall are musical notes. . Must visit.

This is a very ancient temple of Lord Shiva who is also known as Shikhanathar. Shikha means hilltop in Sanskrit. The name signifies that the Lord is the ruler of this mountain.
It is a medium sized temple that is cared for by The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Inside the temple complex there is a separate temple for Goddess Akhilandeshwari and all the other Gods who can be found in a typical Shiva temple.
The temple has some exquisite carvings that should not be missed.
Note: Don't carry food items while entering this temple because, there are lot of monkeys here. They generally don't disturb the devotees.
Don't forget to visit the Murugan temple temple nearby on the hilltop.

Beautiful with peaceful environment. You will love to stay in this Temple. Moolavar(god) is Shiva. But this lingam is little different then known/common lingam. This lingam has kudumi(sikha), so this Temple and hill named as KUDUMIYAAN MALAI. i just get to know from local people.

I visited this temple on 23.2.14.Before visiting this temple my imagination is so high but in real it is not so. Some sculpures and caving top of the hill 63 Nayanmars and shiva parvati in Rishaba vahanam worthy and speciality of this temple. ENTRANCE should be encroachment free and facelift should be given to the Entrance and approach road
