One of a kind, a must visit 3 story temple carved from top down manner. The marvellous skills our ancestors had in constructing these megalithic structures & their way of handling the rocks like it's piece of cake, the stories of Ramayana & Mahabharata has been encrypted on these temple walls went through multiple invaders for decades who couldn't take down, yea it's hard to see all the damages they have caused to these caves & temples.

Wonderful place of history, so neat & fine art of all sculpture.
The Kailasa Temple is notable for its vertical excavation carvers started at the top of the original rock and excavated downward. The traditional methods were rigidly followed by the master architect which could not have been achieved by excavating from the front.

A wonderful rock cut temple, which has been cut out from a massive monolithic rock. It is an excellent engineering feat by any standards. The temple is in three tiers. Two towers are there in the courtyard along with two elephant sculptures. The ground tier has an all round pillars and alcoves with bass relief sculptures depicting various episodes narrated about Bhagwan Shiva and Vishnu. The first tier has the main temple with Nandi, a massive Shiva lingam surrounded by several small temples. The idols in these small temples are missing.
The towers in the courtyard are seen in the Rs 20 currency note.
The beauty of this temple cannot be described in words. It has to be experienced.
The imagination and engineering skill of the architect in cutting out rock from the top with the entire temple in mind along with its sculptures, steps, idols, pillars etc is unbelievable.

I finally got to see the Ellora Cave from the Indian Rs 20 note, and it was right there in front of me. It was a moment of wonder, excitement for me. It took almost an hour from Ambassador Ajanta Hotel, Aurangabad to Ellora. It's not just a place for grown-ups; It's also a great place for kids to visit because they can learn a lot from the experience. The intricate cuttings, sculptures, miniature figures told stories of three religious systems or great faiths- Hinduism, Jain traditions, and Buddhist teachings, creating a harmonious convergence of diverse spiritual narratives. Cave No 16, the Kailasa Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva surrounded by all Avatars and Deities, stands as a colossal marvel, a monolithic testimony to the architectural prowess of its creators. The ancient ancestors who built these caves were really smart and creative, and they understood how to make things strong and beautiful. They combined engineering skills with their religious beliefs to create these incredible wonders. So, when you visit, it's not just a sightseeing trip; it's a chance to learn and be amazed by the incredible things our advanced ancestors could do. Electronic vehicle facilities within the perimeter are available for ease of visiting different cave sites.

Man made wonder. Spectacular and amazing work.
It is hard to believe that it is man made structure.
It is single rock cut temple, somewhat destroyed by Muslim kings, but still it is wonderful experience to visit it.
Must visit place at least once

Tip - Do not get a guide from outside. They will charge you 800-1200 and they are not even allowed to go inside the temple because inside there are government approved guides only. They charge about Rs. 500-800 and will explain you everything in detail. Don’t get fooled by outside local guides.

This temple will surely make you proud as an Indian.

If you are visiting Ellora Caves and you have very short time say one hour, then definitely visit Kailasa Temple, because it is the main attraction among more than 100 caves which consists of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain arts.
Kailasa is a monolithic Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
You will be amazed by the intricate art works all over the temple. According to some sources it is said that workers chiseled the rock from upside and ended at bottom.
Lastly if you are planning to visit Ellora Caves then also add Grishaneswar Jyotirlinga in your list because it is adjacent to Ellora Caves

This is the world's greatest monolithic rock cut temple excavated from top to bottom. The temple was constructed around 7th century AD by the Rashtrakutas and took over 200 years to complete. The temple corridor is having columned pillars with sculptures of Shaivaites on one side and Vaishnavaites on the other. The main temple is called Ranga Mantapa and illustrates 2 great epics - Ramayana and Mahabharata, along with other marvelous sculptures. This cave alone will take approx 3 hours to cover fully. The famous pillar is on the Rs. 20 note issued by Government of India.

It's the main attraction in the Ellora Caves park. It's a super impressive architecture which took 200 years to make, and they carved it out of a single rock from top to bottom. Lots of different people from different times worked on it, and it shows how talented they were. If you want a great view of the top of the temple, head to the right side of the hill, that's the perfect spot.

I suggest going to Ellora in the morning or evening because it gets very hot at noon.

The Kailash temple at Ellora was made by the Rashtrakuta dynasty as a temple for Lord Shiva. Perhaps, it was meant to be a lookalike of Mount Kailash, the mystical abode of Shiva. The Kailash Temple is a standalone, multi-storeyed temple complex, made to look like Mount Kailash - the puranic home of Lord Shiva.
