History of Kala Chabutra (renamed as Kranti Chowk after Independence)
Many people have asked us this question as to how Kranti Chowk got its name and why is Kala Chabutra near it so named....so we did some research, inquired searched & referred notes for the answer.
We could gather the following info from our humble effort:
In 1857 there was uprising against British in the Army in Aurangabad. To suppress this, special force were marched to Aurangabad from Pune & Ahmadnagar under Major-General Woodburn.
Mir Fida Ali, the Daffadar, had fired his pistol at Captain Abbott, officer commanding 1st cavalry and for this act of his, was hanged. A number of persons were put on trial. The trials of these persons continued for a few days as a result of which 21 persons were shot to death, and 3 were blown away from guns.
The names of some 20 soldiers of the Cavalry who were arrested and put to death are as follows: --
Modi Khan, Mirza Azim Beg, Jan Baz Khan, Hussain Khan, Shaik Rahim, Shaik Malik, Mohamed Mir Khan No. I, Ahmed Khan, Mohamed Mir Khan .No. II, Mir Mazar Ali, Shaik Fateh Mohamed, Noor Khan, Mohamed Raza, Mir Imam Ali, Dilavar Khan, Mir Badar Ali, Shaik Hussain, Kasim Ali Khan, Faiz Mohamed Khan, Abdulla Khan.
Besides the above, a number of people were also flogged and turned out of the army. The outbreak at Aurangabad is thus the first serious incident which occurred in the State of Hyderabad in 1857 within a few weeks of the outbreak at Meerut in Northern India.
The place where the soldiers were put to death is known as Kala Chabutra and the chowk near to it is now known as Kranti Chowk where the revolution of 1857 began against the British rule.
