It was by chance that I got to be in Cherthala and also visit the Basilica at Arthunkal. It's a marvelous piece of architecture, both the old and the new church. The new church faces the beach which is a minute drive or walk. On the way to the beach you'll find the police station also.

Words aren't enough to express the divine presence one feels inside the church. There are a lot of tableaus around the church depicting the various events in the Bible.

There's ample parking outside and a few stores to buy candles, rosary beads, Bibles etc. There's space to burn and offer the candles.

Whether you're a believer or not, it's a must visit place in Cherthala.

If you're going to visit, make sure to visit all the churches and statues in and around the main church. You'll find hidden meanings or stories behind those sculptures and also the old church, it was old but still. The structure said a lot about how the prayers and masses were conducted there. I would recommend visiting atleast once...

This is the most famous shrine in Alleppey (Alappuzha) district. The church established by the Portuguese in CE 1581. Father Kuriakose Elias Chavara had begun his priestly career here. A statue of St. Sebastian reached here like a mystery. A ship carrying this statue from Milan, Italy to elsewhere faced fierce and adverse weather and was forced to land in Arthunkal, and they decided to install the statue here, in CE 1640s. It is interesting to note, Hindu population also consider this shrine as theirs. They follow certain customs here in connection with Sabarimala pilgrimage.

This is one of the prettiest beachside churches in India. Built by the Britishers, it highlights the intricate modern architecture and tall interiors with minimal lighting.

In my view this is the best church that I have seen in Kerala......It's a bit distance from the Alleppey proper but worth visiting. In my views THE BEST in terms of aesthetics...But the Golden Church in Kochi near Lulu Mall is the best in terms of Grandeur

Must watch!!! A memorable church ! Beautiful architecture and place. Having a plenty of parking space so many shops to roam. Decent place to get “konta”. I had visited so many famous temples all over Kerala, every here and there I witnessed was business. The prices for offerings seems very high and if you ask the guy about that offering he will first give you an arrogant smile then in arrogant tone he replies to you. But here I was unaware about the offering so I asked one of the priest about the offering at the counter. He was sitting in a chair, as soon as I asked him he stood up with a very pleasant smile and brief me everything with a very calm and soft voice with a very pleasant smile. You can take pictures inside the very very beautiful chapel! Place are so neat. About the surroundings I couldn’t find not much restaurants nearby. Only 2 might be available with a limited seats. Will go again for sure !
