Mogalmari Bauddha Mahavihara

History of glorious past of Bengal can be witnessed here! One will get goosebumps while visiting the place. As if you will get back to the time when the Mahavihar was vibrating with life and activities.The government should protect the site with more care and continue the excavation work. The museum should also be taken care of.

Very peaceful place. It was 1st excavated in 2002 and recent excavation was in 2012.
Well maintained by ASI. For now the working is stopped.
There is a small museum beside the site. We were very fortunate to witness such site that carries forward the rich history of West Bengal.

A historical structure of Post Gupta Era & one of the oldest and biggest Buddhist Monastrey in North-Eastern India. It is situated beside the NH-60 , very well preserved by ASI.

It is very historical place. This bouddha bihar was built in 6th Century that means it is 1400 years old.

Moghalmari is located on the left bank of Subarnarekha River in the district of West Medinipur, 3.2 miles north of Dantan. Since the turn of the millennium an extensive excavation have reveled the remains of an ancient Budhhist Monastery.

The name Moghalmari probably originated from a pitch battle of 16th century between the Mughal and the local king. Although the Mughal army emerged victorious but a large number of Mughal soldiers were killed and hence the name.

The place came into lime light only in 1999 when Prof. Asok Dutta, of the Archaeological Department of Calcutta University took up the initiative of an archaeological study of the area.

The antiquity of the place have been traced long before. British surveyor H. L. Harrison mention of bricks unearthed from Moghalmari way back in 1873.

The famous Chinese traveller Xuanzang (more popularly known as Hiuen Tsang) mentioned about 10 Buddhist Monasteries in the Tamralipta area during his visit in the 7th century CE. But sadly he didn’t mention any names and in the process keeping the archaeologist and historians in the dark.

Since Moghalmari is located very close to Tamralipta, so was the excavated site one of those Buddhist Monasteries visited by the famous Chinese traveller?

Interestingly the time line matches with the archaeological evidences but archaeologists are still not able to come to a concrete conclusion and they need to dig up more evidences for it.

The proper excavation started in 2003 and Sakhisener Dhibi or Sashisener Dhibi, which was designated as MGM1, excavation was also carried on another nearby smaller site designated as MGM2. The MGM1 was a huge mound and occupied by the Tarun Seva Sangha O Pathagar, who have have their club building right atop the mound.

Well maintained archeological site.

It was great to know about the history of Moghalmari. It's a wonderful destination to visit for a bit of knowledge of our dynasty and has a refreshing environment.

If you are a history lover, you should visit this place. Car parking may not be available, and no tickets to enter.

Amazing place as a tourist attraction. Contains ancient ruins of Buddhist centre of learning and monastery dating back to the Gupta and medieval period. Contains a nice and informative museum also, the staff is courteous. Initially excavated by Calcutta University, now maintained by GoWB. Just beside Kolkata-Bhubaneshwar highway near Belda and Dantan.

A place of historical Buddhist monastery preserved nicely by Government of West Bengal.This place is located close to Keshiary at West Midnapur.Must visit place for school children's for witnessing evidence of history of Buddhism.

A detailed excavation of the site started in November 2013 by the State Archaeological Directorate led to discovery of several artifacts and tablets.

It's a historical place and it belonged to the post Gupta period.

The remains is of post Gupta period. Still excavation is not completed. The excavation till now unearthed several Buddhist sculptures and utensils and iron meterials.

Good place for experience in our Indian culture and richness of our past. Will be glad if neverhood system like pudding and ticketing facilities available there for persons who are visiting there more donation needed in my view.

Need more attention from government, if this kind to things are their then we need to excavation more, invent more, make this small place a sensation.

It is a Bauddha Mahabihar. The work here is still under process to find it.
