Uttar Kamalabari Satra

Satra-s are a sort of templesara seen in Assam and adjoing states of North-East India.
These are associated with a religious school and residence or hostels for monks called " Bhakta"-s. This is as per tradition established by Srimant Shankar Deva, the famous 15th-16th century Vaishnava Saint from Assam.

The Satra-s structurally have a common design - they all have an entrance gate called Torana, a big garden, ponds and a temple surrounded by long barrack-like hostels for monks. The temple has an elongated rectangular hall or Mandapa in front and a sanctum with a tower behind. The sanctum houses the Bigraha-s or idols of Lord Krishna and others.

Uttara Kamalabari Satra, situated in Majuli island, the largest riverine island of the world formed naturally inside the mighty river Brahmaputra in Assam, is a beautiful Satra along Srimant Shankar Deva's line.

The beautiful Torana (gate), the spacious garden full of trees, the long barrack-like residential hostels for the monks called Bhakata-s and above all, the beautiful temple with a rectangular Mandapa (Hall) and a sactum with Bigrahas (idols) of Lord Krishna - all are eye-catching and gorgeous.

This Satra stands out for its preservation and practice of the art form- Satriya Nritya. Having showcased the art in several states of India and abroad, Uttar Kamalabari Satra has become a symbol of Majuli’s cultural legacy.

Is one of the center of Neo-Vaisnavite culture in Assam founded by Bedulapadma Ata. It is the center of culture, art, literature and classical studies. A must visit when you are in Majuli.

Majuli is land of satras. . It was clean, peaceful and divine. A must visit during the tour.

The moment I entered into this satra, I felt as if have travelled into the past and entered into a place where people follow their culture and believe in their beliefs. Lovely, A historical place... surrounded with scilence and peace ...

Very hospitable people. Seems like this place takes me back on time. It is as if time has stood still. Slow pace of life makes you never want to leave. The old buildings here are beautiful, built with simple techniques and local materials. The monks are ever willing to talk and cast with you. They can also arrange a traditional dance performance on prior request is what I was told.

One of the many Satras of river island Majuli. A great place to connect with the higher soul. The ambience is just right for one to feel bliss. There is a guest house near by .

Nice place. The Uttar Kamalabari Satra was established in the year 1673. The Structure of the Namghar and the houses in the Satra are ancient style and the Karukarya is very nice. In this Satra there is a cultural hall where the cultural activities performed.

The satra has a guest house adjacent and at the price of nothing. The people are good and helpful. A small eatery in front of the guest house provides home cooked meals on request. Best and cheapest place in majuli to stay.

Beautiful atmosphere with the great culture , Contrast to the Namghars of other places, completely unaffected by modernization, which brings it's uniqueness and must place to visit
