Badami fort and Caves are situated beside Badami City at a walking distance. Agastya lake is situated in the center and on the left hand of the Lake Badami fort is situated and on the right hand Badami caves are situated. Very good place to learn about the Indian history and architecture and art from the past times. Badami caves contains rock cutting architecture, images of Indian mythological stories from both Hindu and Jain cultures.

To visit one must visit the fort side first and then the caves. The Agastya lake is worth visiting in the morning and at the sunset when the image of both Sunrise and Sunset looks beautiful. You can see the fisherman and birds hunting fishes in the lake.

Few hotels appropriate for family are located in the city to stay but during peak season one must find it hard to get rooms. Limited food options are available both veg and non-veg. Few hotels are there which has liquor shop too and serves alcohol, that might not be a good or appropriate option for staying with families.

Most of these temples do not have any idols inside as a sign of invasions. However, the invasions or attacks completely failed to mask the original Hindu identity of these places. Perfect example of fine single stone carving art. Must visit if you are visiting nearby places like Hampi.

Fascinating dive into the history of Dravidian architecture and beginning of cave temples in southern India.
The carvings on the caves are breathtaking and very ornate.
Only 4 caves are open to public and can be covered in 30 mins or so.
Please wear walking shoes as they're are steps to be climbed and best time to visit is between 9-11am when the sun is shinning on the caves.

Beautiful place, the carvings are fascinating and very ornate. There are four caves and you can cover them in 1-2 hours. There is Bhootnath Temple, Agastya Lake, archeological museum and few more ancient temples nearby in walking distance which you can explore after the caves. I'd recommend to visit only on weekdays if you really want to explore the place.

One of the most important places to see in Badami. The caves are accessible by car or by walk. It's about 15 min walk from bus stand. There are 4 caves. They have many intricate carvings and some have paintings too. The steps are high but not too many. There are many monkeys on the surrounding hills so one has to be careful. Ticket is 25 Rs. for Indian national with no charges for photography.

An absolutely special experience while visiting this historic site at Badami during my recent solo motorcycle ride to Karnataka.

It was extremely crowded that day as it was the Sankranti weekend so it wasn't the best of the experiences, especially with all the school kids shouting!

But overall it was a fabulous experience marvelling at all that history and beauty created by the Chalukyas thousands of years back!

A must visit site for anyone interested in knowing more about our glorious history.

100% recommended.

Badami Caves: Where Art and History Carve a Timeless Tapestry

The Badami Caves, carved into the sandstone cliffs overlooking a tranquil lake, are not just monuments of ancient artistry; they're whispers of the Chalukya dynasty's glorious past, echoing through centuries. Each cave unveils a unique chapter in Hindu and Jain history, while the intricate carvings speak volumes about the exceptional skill of the era's craftsmen.

Carving History in Stone:

A kaleidoscope of faiths: Four of the five caves are dedicated to Hindu deities, showcasing scenes from the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, intricate depictions of Vishnu and Shiva, and captivating stories of celestial dancers and mythical creatures. The fifth cave, the Jain Parshvanatha Temple, offers a glimpse into another faith, with its serene Buddha figures and geometric patterns.

A testament to skill: The meticulous carvings are the highlight of the Badami experience. From the life-size sculptures of gods and goddesses to the delicate floral motifs and the intricate narrative panels, each detail showcases the unparalleled craftsmanship of the Chalukya artists.

Timeless tales, frozen in stone: Each cave tells a story, not just through sculptures but also through intricate paintings and inscriptions. These stories, frozen in time, offer a window into the beliefs, values, and artistic sensibilities of a bygone era.

Beyond the Carvings:

An immersive experience: Exploring the Badami Caves is not merely a visual treat; it's an immersive journey into history. You can climb the steps carved into the cliff face, feel the coolness of the cave walls against your skin, and imagine the lives of the people who worshipped and created art here centuries ago.

A scenic backdrop: The caves are not isolated. They stand beside a beautiful lake, reflecting the sky and the sandstone cliffs like a mirror. The gentle breeze and the lush greenery add to the serene atmosphere, making the experience even more captivating.

A hidden gem: Compared to other popular historical sites, the Badami Caves remain relatively untouched by tourism. This adds to their charm and allows you to explore them at your own pace, without the hustle and bustle of large crowds.

Overall:

The Badami Caves are a must-visit for anyone seeking a unique blend of art, history, and natural beauty. They offer a glimpse into a fascinating past, a chance to witness the skill of ancient artisans, and a space to unwind and contemplate in a serene setting.

Pros:

Intricate and captivating carvings

Diverse representation of Hindu and Jain faiths

Serene atmosphere and beautiful natural backdrop

Relatively less crowded than other historical sites

Immersive and enriching experience

Cons:

Climbing the steps can be challenging for some

Limited information boards within the caves

Basic infrastructure like restrooms and eateries

Final Verdict:

The Badami Caves are a hidden gem offering a unique and unforgettable experience. Be prepared for some physical exertion and limited facilities, but the artistic, historical, and spiritual rewards are undeniable.

Great place but there is a lot of walking and climbing. Be sure to pack plenty of water and be wary of the troops of wandering monkeys. The carvings are next level but the caves have a distinct smell of bat droppings.

Enthralling and transporting experience when you include the caves, the ghats, temples and the museum. Children and adults alike were captivated by the sheer scale and ingenuity of the art displayed here. Approach road is dangerously narrow and can be as frustrating as the hordes of monkeys.

Heritage site of India showing to the modern world today how artistic and exploring were our ancestors. Built around 6th century the site has withstood the test of time and nature. With the limited infrastructure and no mechanical resources these wonderful structures are built beautifully. The Chalukya dynasty was reigning during the time this is constructed and later preserved by the Hoysalas until the Dehli sultanate defeated them.

You need to walk around a bit. If you are physically fit do explore the area completely. Recommended to visit early morning as you will have more time and more energy to explore.

This place is surreal due its location and geographical features. The caves are similar to other Buddhist caves like Karle in Maharashtra, but the beauty lies in the setting of Badami.

Lived the experience. Age old caves carved with beautiful figures of Shiva, Vishnu, Devis... One cave depicts Jain culture.
