Sundhareswarar Temple, Chennai Navagraha Sthalam for Budhan

This temple is a famous sthalam for one of the Navagrahas lord Bhudhan. It is siva temple but very famous in terms of power. Most old tamil movies are shot near this temple. I add photos and it tells you all. This temple have seen more actors in the past. The vibe of this temple is very good.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

As per Kanchipuram Mavatta Tholliyal Kaiyedu, Rajaraja Chozha-I’s 9th reign year inscription on a pillar in the inner prahara records the endowment of conducting daily poojas by a lady of this Village. For the same she had purchased a land by paying Gold and gifted to this temple. The inscription mentions Shiva’s name as "Rajarajeswaramudaya nayanar", in the name of the King.

Another inscription records the endowment of burning a lamp by Kaman Perungattu Pillai. For the same he had deposited 10 panam with the temple’s Perumal Bhattan. In the Inscription Kaman Perungattu Pillai, mentions that he was one of the 70 families and belongs to Thirumyalapore Elelasinga’s parambara family, who are made to settle by Karikalan at Kanchi Ramathevachery.

Another Vijayakanda Gopalan’s 5th reign year ( 1253 CE ) inscription is on the south side of the Temple, which indicates that the temple was reconstructed during 13th century

Famous for being the temple shown in.movies and serials, this hidden gem of a temple, Isa pariharasthalam for Budhan (Mercury) related issues. The temple towershows Thiyagaraja Swami, carried in.a palaquin.and refers to the temple legend of him being attacked here by robbers and two young boys (Sri Rama and Lakshmana disguise) pelting stones at the robbers

Presiding deity Lord Sundareswarar and his consort Goddess Soundarambikai is divine, beautiful and graceful.
This is a Navagraha (Budhan) Parihara Sthalam of Thondai Mandalam.
Tamil poet and scholar Sekkizhar wrote some parts of Periya Puranam in this temple.
Saint Thyagaraja wrote 5 Pancharatnams (called as Kovur Pancharatnam) here.

One of ancient sivan temple located at kovoor. Every body must visit. This temple is also known as bhuthan sthalam.

Such a serene and divine place. Most of the tamil film shooting used to happened here earlier. So blissful. There is no separate shrine for Budhan. The moolvar sundhreswarar should be worshipped on Wednesdays for people seeking Budhan vazipadu.

One of the oldest temples. Known as budhan sthalam. Morning they will close it by 11.30AM itself. And they will open again 4.00PM. Plan accordingly if you want to visit. Temple staffs are very helpful. Very less crowd when compared to other old temples. Good amount of area for parking.

Very quiet place ...entrance is an avenue like ...parking space available....but difficult if crowd there ...temple is neat .....go @ less popular times first time

Mythology

Constructed in about 965 CE, the presiding deity of the temple is Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva and the presiding goddess is Soundarambikai.

According to legend, Goddess Kamakshi was performing thapas (penance) on Panchagni (fire) in Maangaadu praying to Lord Shiva to marry Her. Her penance was so intense that the whole surroundings became very hot and all living beings started to suffer because of this enormous heat. However, since Lord Shiva was deeply meditating with His eyes closed, He did not perceive this. Therefore, all Sages and Devas prayed to Lord Vishnu to save the world from the heat of the penance. Lord Vishnu directed Sri Mahalakshmi to save the world.

Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi came down here to this place in the form of a cow and worshipped Lord Shiva to request Him to open His eyes, so that the world could be saved. Pleased with Her prayers, Lord Shiva opened His eyes, after which the heat of the place subsided and became cooler. As Sri Mahalakshmi worshipped here in the form of a cow, the place came to be known as Kopuri (In Thamizh, Ko means cow) and later corrupted to become Kovur.

Sri Sundhareswarar temple in Kovur is one of the Navagraha sthalams around Chennai. This is the Budhan Sthalam in Chennai.

The temple is located close to 4 kms from Mangadu Kamakshi Amman temple. Kovur is a about 10 kms from Pallavaram, on the road going from Kunrathur towards Porur. The temple is located about 200 meters off the main road - narrow roads. The temple has a beautiful tall Rajagopuram. Main deities - Lord Sri Sundhareswarar and Goddess Sri Soundharaambigai. The Lord is also called Thirumaeneeswarar. Other deities are Sri Veerabadhrar, Sri Subramanyar and Navagraha

Good spacious temple with ample parking in wide road.

One of the peaceful temple I've even been to. The temple is full of positive energy and it's quite calm too.. it's a must visit place and please be calm and do your prayers if you go here, I wish everyone could experience it.
