విజయవాడ బందరురోడ్డులో ఉన్న దండమూడి రాజగోపాలరావు ఇండోర్‌ స్టేడియం నగరంలోని క్రీడాకారులకు వరం లాంటిది. ఆసియా క్రీడల పతక విజేత, ఒలింపిక్‌ వెయిట్‌ లిఫ్టర్‌, బాడీబిల్డర్‌, రంగస్థల/సినీనటుడు, స్పోర్ట్స్‌ ఆడ్మినిస్ట్రేటర్‌ మరియు కోచ్‌ అయిన దండమూడి రాజగోపాలరావు గారి ప్రతిభకు మెచ్చి ప్రభుత్వం కేటాయించిన స్థలంలో, ఆయన పేరుతోనే ఈ ఇండోర్‌ స్టేడియంను 2.5 ఎకరాలలో షుమారు 31 లక్షల వ్యయంతో 1980లో నిర్మించారు. జాతీయ మరియు అంతర్జాతీయ టోర్నమెంట్లు, ఛాంపియన్షిప్పులు ఇక్కడ జరిగాయి. దీనిని అప్పటి ముఖ్యమంత్రి టి.అంజయ్య ప్రారంభించాడు.
దండమూడి రాజగోపాలరావు (అక్టోబరు 16, 1916 - ఆగష్టు 6, 1981) భారతదేశానికి చెందిన వెయిట్‌లిఫ్టింగ్‌ క్రీడాకారుడు, ''ఇండియన్‌ టార్జన్‌'' అన్న బిరుదు పొందారు. తెలుగు రంగస్థల, సినిమా నటుడు. ఈయన 1951లో ఢిల్లీలో జరిగిన ప్రథమ ఆసియా క్రీడోత్సవాలలో వెయిట్‌ లిఫ్టింగ్‌ పురుషుల సూపర్‌ హెవీవెయిట్‌ (105 కేజీలు) వర్గములో కాంస్య పతకాన్ని గెలుచుకున్నాడు. ఈయన 1963లో విడుదలైన నర్తనశాల సినిమాలోనూ, 1965లో విడుదలైన వీరాభిమన్యు సినిమాలోనూ, భీముని పాత్ర పోషించాడు.
కోడి రామ్మూర్తి నాయుని స్ఫూర్తితో బరువులు ఎత్తటం ఒక వ్యాసంగంగా స్వీకరించాడు. కొంతకాలం బరువులెత్తడంలో శిష్ట్లా సోమయాజులు వద్ద శిక్షణ పొందాడు. ఆ తరువాత కొల్లి రంగదాసుతో పాటు సంచరిస్తూ అనేక రాష్ట్రాలు, దేశాలలో ప్రదర్శనలిచ్చాడు. (చలపాక ప్రకాష్ రచన “విజయవాడ సందర్శనం” నుండి సేకరణ)
