Myth of people, Lord Shiva appeared before Maharaja Krishnachandra and told him that he was shifting base from Varanasi to his capital. To please the god, the Maharaja set up a new capital at Sibnibas and constructed 108 Shiva temples there. Krishnachandra wanted to save his capital Krishnanagar from the invading Marathas (Bargis) shifted it to Shivniwas, which is surrounded on three sides by the river Churni.
This is one of the houses the largest 'Shiblingo' in eastern India. The two temples, along with a Ram-Sita temple. The place is so pleasant and beautiful and here exists a small Bamboo bridge.

According to legends, Shivniwas owes its origin to a dream. One in which Lord Shiva appeared before Maharaja Krishnachandra and told him that he was shifting base from Varanasi to his capital. To please the god, the Maharaja set up a new capital at Shivniwas and constructed 108 Shiva temples there.
Historians offer a more rational explanation. They maintain that in the middle of the 18th Century, Krishnachandra to save his capital Krishnanagar from the invading Marathas (Bargis) shifted it to Shivniwas, which is surrounded on three sides by the river Churni.
The Maharaja christened the new capital Shivniwas, probably after the god. Some historians though claim that it was named after Krishnachandra’s son Shivachandra.
Only two of the 108 temples exist now. One of them houses the largest shivling in eastern India. The two temples, along with a Ram-Sita temple, and the ruins of Krishnachandra’s palace are all that remain of Shivniwas’s glorious past.
The government has made no effort to preserve the historical sites at Shivniwas. But despite all odds, it serves as a perfect spot for a weekend outing.

Lovely place with temple of Lord Shiva. Calm and cool. Good for a few hours outing from Kolkata.
On the way, one has to walk over a bamboo bridge on Churni river which gives a nostalgic feeling.

Starting from the first restoration of 1965-66, the temple has been restored, or rather reconstructed, several times, the last one taking place in February 2006, when shabby looking iron railings were added to the octagonal platform. Today the cemented plastered temple, neither resembles the grace and beauty of the original structure and the yellow and pink paint looks totally out of place. Thus the 250 year old temple is totally reconstructed and thus in the process wiping out a piece of history from the face of the planet.
Although the outside of the temple has been totally modified into a modern structure, the inside of the octagonal temple remains the same. The Raj Rajeswar temple has the distinction of housing the largest Shiv Linga in Eastern India. Measuring 2.7m in height and 6.7m in circumference (including spout), the black stone Shiv Linga is definitely the star attraction of Shivniwas. At the back of the Linga a flight of stairs lead the devotees to a height of about 1m, thus allowing them to pour water on the giant linga.

It was only pilgrims from nearby areas who arrive here to pay their respect to the deities in the old temples, the only reminders of the city and the capital that Maharaja Krishnachandra had built in the mid-18th century. In winter, the riverside is populated by picnickers.Three temples built by the King still survive, two dedicated to Shiva and one to Ram-Sita. One of the Shiva temples, built in 1754, is known as Raj-Rajeshwar. It enshrines a nine feet high Shivling (local people call it Buro Shib or the Old Shiva).
