Mahakam River

Traveling upriver is a fantastic adventure. Start in Kota Bangun, so that you skip the most industrial and ripetitive part, take a long boat or the Kapal Biasa to arrive upstream to Melak. There you can go up to Tirin by car (depending on the season the Kapal Biasa has a last stop in Melak) and from there look for a long boat to go up, and see the limestones walls that bring to Long Bagun (800 000rp). You need some time to go so upstream independently (think about 7 days at least) otherwise do it with a local guide from Samarinda. Take some more days to stop coming down in the lake regions (starting from Muara Murtai). It is the land of Daayak people. It is difficult to meet more gentle and welcoming villages. You will be invited inside the houses.

Jaw-dropping view. I will always miss the days when we enjoyed both sunrise and sunset in this river. I can say this is the most romantic river in the Indonesia :)

Majestic. Magnificent. Awesome. Iconic. That's what can I say about Mahakam river in Samarinda. You can easily spot public place here in every corner and sidewalk. There is mosque standing here. You can also be amazed by seeing and passing the bridge. If you want a little scene, you dan decide to go to one of food stall here in the afternoon and see what happens. Beautiful sunset will appear in the edge of the river.

Mosquitoes are humongous and stabby, the crocs also eat people they could get their claws into. 10/10 would visit lmao
