Fort Amsterdam

Fort Amsterdam is among the less publicized monuments in Ghana 🇬🇭 but I loved it when I visited the place.

Although most of the upper floors have collapsed but it was worth visiting.

A must visit Fort on your way to Cape coast.

The guide Joseph Kofi (Friday born like me) was an amazing host. The fort was small but very intimate. It made me sad to hear the history. Great place to see.

The castle is currently being restored (as of 2019) but you can still visit it, no problemo. Senior director Kofi will take you around for a historical tour of the castle for 10 cedis per person. He's super fun and knowledgeable. The view is great. As you'll be the only people there it makes for a super authentic, non-touristy experience 👌

The history is the same as other castles along the coast. Built for goods trading and later converted to slave trading.

This Fort happened to be one of the fortz established by our colonial masters and it was sad how they came and exploit our resources and inflicted pains on us one way or the other. Our forefathers really fought a battle. But the Fort is still well maintained

Fort Amsterdam Slave Castle in Abandze, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a great edifice to behold!!

Am informed that it was built by the English between 1638 and 1645 as Fort Cormantin and was captured by admiral Michiel de Ruyter of the Dutch West India Company in 1665, in retaliation for the capture of several Dutch forts by the English Admiral Holmes in 1664.

I could not get into the castle proper but my interaction with the local people revealed that it was in ruins and if properly rehabilitated, it would attract a lot of tourists and consequently, revenue for development.

Old fort needs a lot of work. Meet Mr Kofi, he shares his passion and dream regarding castle restoration. Dear tourism Authority please look into it.

Very Cool Place to visit for fun and for education. I mean to learn some thing about slave trade

Very good historical site but abandoned by authorities. Freelance tour guide is however there to take tourists round.
