Small but packed with mags, books and all the WHSmiths norms

The store has a good variety of popular books for its size, however it does not offer as large a selection of books as a bigger store would. The store has a dedicated selection of stationery, but the price is higher than would normally be expected and would be too high for most students. I found the staff to be very helpful.

Long wait at tills

I am a retired professional woman having spent 28 years dealing with the public.

Yesterday when I entered the store I had received a call from my mother. I ended up going to the till to pay for the item while on my mobile. I politely acknowledged the shop assistant with a smile and paid and said thank you while I remained on the phone. As I turned to put my purse away, the shop assistance raised her voice saying “thankyou” sarcastically. I turned to look at her and could not believe that the sarcastic remark was for me. I asked her if there was a problem as she was now serving another customer. She remarked to the customer that I was on my phone.

What did this shop assistant want me to do..... end my phone call because she wanted my full attention. I had acknowledged her and thanked her but obviously this was not enough for her. WARNING to any other customer entering store.... switch you phone off.

My mother informed me that she also had been spoken to rudely by the male Manager at the store. She had asked him if she could pay for some items. He abruptly replied that there were self service tills, to which she informed him that she was not sure how to use them. He then reluctantly went behind the till for her to pay.

Some of the other reviews comment on how friendly the staff are.... that is clearly not the case for us.

WHSmiths have definitely lost our custom from now on.

Such an old fadhioned overpriced shop....the staff were cheerful and friendly.
