My daughter was a complete beginner 2 years ago when she first started having drum lessons with Richard and she has made great progress. She has achieved a distinction in both of the Grade exams she has taken and really enjoys her lessons. I would recommend Richard to anyone looking for a drum teacher.

After looking for a new teacher for several months I stumbled across Leicester Drum School. Shortly after I started having lessons I made great progress and reached grade 5 in a very short space of time. With Richard’s teaching I have developed a solid foundation in rudiments which I previously did not appreciate and have developed the skills to play along with a lot of songs I couldn’t previously. I would highly recommend this drum school to current drummers wanting to improve or even people with no experience at all.

Richard's a great drum teacher! I would recommend him to both beginners and more advanced drummers. I had a gap from drumming for a good few years so I've had quite a few teachers in the past and Richard's approach was perfect, he's patient and motivating and I look forward to every lesson- thank you !

Richard has been an excellent drum tutor to my son for the past 10 years.
My son Joel began drum lessons with Richard at age 8 as a total beginner. Over the next few years he took his Trinity Drum kit gradings reaching grade 8 at age 16. Throughout these years Joel has always enjoyed learning and developing as a drummer with Richards help.
Richards passion for music helped my son as he took his studies to Leicester college to study music performance.
Joel has played in several bands including the Enderby Brass Band and won individual awards for his percussion.
Joel is now enjoying gigging with his own bands and we are both grateful to Richard for his help and support.

My 10 year old son has been learning to play the drums since he was 6 years old with Richard and has recently passed his grade 2 with a merit after just 6 months of preparation! I could not find another teacher who would take my son on so young, but Richard was willing to teach him simply on the snare drum to begin with as he wasn't quite big enough for the drum kit. After completing grades 1 + 2 on the snare drum very successfully, Richard decided it was time to take him a step further and to have a go at playing the full drum kit. Now just four years on, my son has passed all of his 4 exams so far first time with 2 distinctions and 2 merits! This would not have been as easily achievable without Richard's constant support, encouragement and one-to-one tuition. I highly recommend Richard as a tutor for drummers of all ages and experience and cant wait to see my son flourish with his talent even further.

My 14 year old son has been learning drums with Richard now for 3 years. He started as a complete beginner and has improved so much he is now loving playing in groups as well as on his own. He always loves going to his lessons and is keen to do well under Richards excellence guidance.

My 10 year old son expressed an interest in learning to play the drums and we were very lucky to find Richard. My son absolutely loves his lessons with him. He reports that he is patient, skilled, enthusiastic and an all-round great teacher.
With his tuition my son recently achieved ‘distinction’ in his grade 1 drumming exam in less than a year!

My 13 year old son has been learning the drums with Richard for a few years now and loves it-Richard is an encouraging, patient and clear teacher and my son has thrived and gained much confidence thanks to this.
Richard is precise but doesn't push beyond capacity- Raph felt ready to do his Grade 2 drum kit exam and passed with Distinction.
Go to Richard if you want to learn drumming.

I have been seeing Richard at Leicester drum school for several years and has taken me from complete beginner to taking my grade 5 soon. He's really patient and lets you learn at your own pace. He's a great player himself and can accommodate a really broad range of styles.

We are delighted with the progress Isabel has made with Richard since starting drum lessons, she has passed her grade 1 with flying colours and is working towards grade 2. We are very impressed with the quality of the teaching. Richard is very friendly the atmosphere is very good for learning, most of all the lessons are fun and Isabel always looks forward to going. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the Leicester Drum School for any aspiring drummer

The quick review - excellent tutor, strict but encouraging and knows how to mix it up to keep learning interesting. Recommended.
Long review - As a mature student, who is self taught & has been banging away on a kit for 3 decades, I finally decided it was time to learn to play the damn things properly. Richard has helped me enormously. I decided to start right from the beginning, learning the rudiments I'd never bothered with before. Richard has been patient and encouraging as I've stripped down my previous 'style' and relearned everything from the ground up.
Each lesson is well prepared as I'm taking the grades, although Richard introduces new rhythms to keep learning fresh and interesting, and is strict, without being pedantic, which I require.
After 6 months I've passed Grade One (100%!) & I'm confident I'll pass Grade Two in a little more than a month's time. More importantly, the long suffering partner recently commented on how more varied, confident & tighter my drumming is now.
So, if you're a newbie or a more experienced player looking to improve your style and ability, I'd thoroughly recommend Richard.

We have been really pleased with our son's drum lessons from Richard, he has progressed really well in a short time frame and really enjoys it too. Richard obviously knows his stuff and how to interact with students to get the most out of them in a structured yet relaxed atmosphere, and is a great guy to top it off. Thanks!

I have been learning to play drums for almost 4 years now and i remember first taking drum lessons from Richard. It was about a year after i started playing, i was trying to teach myself and picking up bits here and there but just didn't feel like i was getting anywhere with it. I saw Richards drumming tuition ad online and thought i would go for it as i really wanted to improve on drums and felt like i just was ant having any fun at that time playing drums. I had one lesson with Richard and i instantly realized that i was enjoying drums again like the very first time i got my drum kit and started my first steps in drumming, i was inspired and i couldn't wait to practice the stuff i had learnt for next lesson. I went back for another lesson and another and each lesson just felt really amazing for me, i was having fun and every time i learnt something new it felt really good especially after hours of practice and finally getting something down ready to show for the next lesson. The drum lessons with Richard are calm, relaxed, and he always tries to help me take my drumming to that extra level, a level where at first i would think how will i ever achieve this but with his level of expertise, skill and patience i see that anything is possible which is why i have been having drum lessons all this time with Richard and wouldn't go to anyone else.

I've been having weekly drum lessons from Richard for just over 2 years. I started out as a complete beginner and he's really helped me get to grips with the core techniques and pushed to work on pieces that I probably wouldn't have tried otherwise. I like the fact that he always has some new rhythm for me each week so I don't get bored but we also work on a mastering a full piece from start to finish. As a keen guitarist for almost 20 years I've had my share of music teachers and Richard is right up there at the top of my list. I mean where else do you find someone with a PhD in music who also writes his own arrangements and gigs regularly! If you live in or around Leicester and are looking for a drum teacher you should check Richard out.

I would highly recommend Leicester Drum School. Richard is an experienced and competent teacher. As a complete beginner I needed a patient and reliable teacher. He has helped to build my confidence and gives me advice on improving and practising the techniques I have learnt.

I've been taking drum lessons with Richard for about 2 months now, and i didn't expect to be as far as i already am. The one to one sessions in his house makes it a calm environment without feeling any pressure that i first thought there would be. Letting you go at your own pace, braking things down making it easier to learn. I walk away after every lesson excited to be learning something new until the next time.

If you want to learn to play drums properly - go to Richard. There are many imitations of the real thing out there, people who are a bit good at it so they think they can teach, but ask for the technical depth and you will find them lacking. I came to drumming late - I treated myself to a teach yourself book and DVD for my 49th birthday - a year later my wife bought me a course of 4 lessons with Richard as a xmas present - that was 4 years ago and I am still going strong. I am a slow learner and have a busy life so practice is not always possible but Richard is very patient with me. He is a perfectionist and he lets me get away with nothing but I wouldnt really have it any other way. If you become a regualr student you will find Richard very flexible and you will be surprised at how much you progress. When we get stuck Richard can always think up a new way to tackle the issue and then it suddenly becomes second nature. Prices are going rate, lessons are structured but varied and if there is something specific that you want to do or learn he is always accommodating. Give him a try, you wont be disappointed.
