Pielpajärvi Wilderness Church

Such a wonderfull abandoned church in top of a hill in middle of the woods.
Old about 300 years, many story's are around it, about a century ago a women had be slaughter, if you are walking by night there you could see her walking trying to scream. And the second historical fact was during the second great war where this church was a defense point where it had a gatling on top of its church !

Beautiful church completely made out of wood! The trail leading to the church and camping area ist easy, yet I’d recommend sturdy shoes even though it’s also easily doable wearing sneakers.

The lake and facilities such as toilets, benches, and a hut with a fireplace and in a great shape! Definitely do this hike when you’re in the area.

What a beautiful hike! One hour walk, without stopping and a big backpack (experienced runner). Heard that the church is not always open, but just go for it. The outside is stunning and if you have the change, talk to the shepherd, he knows a lot about the area. Go there with sun, you get nice pics...

Beautiful hike through ancient wilderness with ponds and marshes. The hike itself is easy but takes time because of the rocks and stumps. Carefully pick your season for this hike. Children and dogs can come along if they are used to these kind of hikes. Day cabin and fire pit just before the church. Church itself is of historic value and in very good shape.

Lovely landscapes and nature on the route and an unique church. Paths are semi-demanding with a lots of rocks and tree roots.

If you are doing one to two days hike near Inari and choosing between this and the dull and quite boring Lemmenjoki national park's routes choose this.

As completely areligious person it's probably the only church I visited twice of my own free will ;) I recommend not only for the object itself but also for 5km long stroll leading to it through stone-marked forest at the Inarijärvi wilderness.

A must see in Inari. It’s pretty easy to reach by a well marked 5 Kilometer walk and once you’re there you can marvel at the church and have a break at a campfire in the small hut there or at the outside fireplace.

Beautiful old church in the middle of nowhere. We walked 4,5km on a forest path to get there. The route was partly hard to walk, it is too much for little children and to people with disabilities. Worth walking, beautiful sight. The church is in a good shape, even though its very old. Go check it out!

Beautiful historical place. The hike is worth it.

The hike from the parking lot to the church is a bit demanding, because of all the roots and stones on the path. The nature is nice and varied a lot. The church itself is an old wooden building, where you can discover almost every corner of. Once or twice a year, they're also doing prayer services, e.g. on midsummer day. 100-150 meters away is a small camp place, where you can relax, eat or make a coffee on the fire place.

Very special place. One of the oldest church in Lapland in a lovely setting where old Inari used to be. I highly reccommend to visit nice 4,6 km walk or ski trail takes to it or you can go with guides from visitinari
