UA - Centre d'Investigació Marina de Santa Pola

Marine biology research centre, linked with the University of Alicante. On Wednesdays they run open days with guided tours in Spanish or English (all free, no pre-booking required). Our guide was a really informative PhD student who gave us a fascinating overview of the sea life around Santa Pola, Tabarca and nearby beaches. Great displays of corals, sea shells, molluscs and skeletons, as well as photos, information boards in Spanish that he explained for us, and a classroom with samples you can touch. They're used to doing school trips so it would be child-friendly for school age. Really good to learn more about the conservation challenges in the area and how we can minimise our impact as tourists. And free safety info on jellyfish and stinging fish. Easy to park in the informal car park on the far side of the road. Most of it is wheelchair accessible - one small step up to the exhibition room, fine for a manual chair but not if you can't do curbs, all the others had ramps. No public toilets that we noticed. Plenty of benches in the courtyard and chairs in the classroom, bring your own or borrow one from the classroom if you need one in the exhibition room.

Se encuentra en un antiguo cuartel de la Guardia Civil restaurado. Es un centro importante para poder proteger la fauna marina de la zona y concienciar sobre la protección del mar a los ciudadanos.
