Authentic and worth your effort for the steep walk up. Once at the top you'll get rewarded with an amazing view. Specially the "rincon de los besos" with the blue flowerpots everywhere. Very quiet and silent, but i guess that's normal in januari

Fantastic views from the castle and from the other side of the hills looking across to Iznajar town and castle.
Beautifully kept place. Has a village feel to it.

Really worth a visit as it's a town with history with a castle well back from "Costa" life. The location is great.

A great pueblo on the side of lake Iznájar. Pretty to walk around with photogenic corners. The town provides some great views and look out for the lovers seat.

Fantastic small medieval city on top of a hill in the undulating hills of Andalucia. Views of the lake, olive groves and tons of quiet

I didn't know much about the history of Spain - and especially the period where Musulman occupied almost all of Spain - it's fascinating. It explains why there is such an interesting mix in eg. the architecture, between the classic Roman, German (Vandals) early Christian, Musulman and late christian (early renaissance and later) styles. Since Spain was a major power in the Middle Ages, they exported this mix all over Europe and to the rest of the world (kolonies).
The castle shows it all, and out of the remains you can derive how the organisation, the politics, the daily life was in those centuries.
The price is sharp for what you get - you would never expect such a treasure behind those gates.
The person behind the desk was so friendly to explain a lot to us before we entered, and it was an interesting history lesson at least. He should be a teacher, that guy. Thanks!
Check the hours, in summer the castle might be closed during siesta. Check their website.
A very educational experience, do it with the kids, they will love it.

A lovely cute village with some steep alleys, nice patios full of flowers, wonderful views over the area and good cafe's. Worth a visit, eventually combined with a boat trip on the lake or a swim.

Iznajar is a beautiful Andalusian town and we really enjoyed our time exploring it and the castle. My 2 year old and 5 year old were fascinated by the castle and the surroundings, including Patio de las Comedias and the knitted art installations throughout. If you’re driving, don’t panic at the steep and very narrow streets, you’ll get through!

Understated but well tended and set up example of a Moorish fort. Great for wandering around as part of an afternoon and plenty of spots to sit down and relax while taking it in.

This place is so important for the history of Spain - I am surprised that so few people realize this was meant to be the original capital of the Caliphate - before Alhambra (!) and it was just that for a bit less than a century, I believe. Then they decided to move it to Granada. Went to see it by day, and then also by night. We LOVED it each time.
