Just a ruin but what a ruin. You can climb stairs, enjoy views, hide in cellars, learn a lot about history. Very nice shop.

Very large, totally free, open (zero security) historic site to wander around. Includes a 5-story tower with spiral staircase to climb. There are a reasonable number of signs in 4 languages (English, Russian, German, and French, I believe) explaining the site's history. Huge, and full of interesting rooms to explore. I'm an impatient traveler who walks fast, and it took me 45 minutes to wander the site. Not remotely wheelchair friendly. Lots of parking. Food and services available at the hotel 100 meters away. One of the larger/more interesting castles I toured in the Baltic region, free, and open 24/7 (there's no one around to "close" it).

▶ Padise Monastery is the oldest (from 13th century) and and in my opinion the most prominent architectural monument in medieval Harju County.

💥 During the Livonian War, the monastery was used as a fortress.

In 1622, the then ruler of Estonia donated the monastery to King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden and the land belonging to it to the cathedral Thomas Ramm of Riga, who moved with his family to Padis.

The monastery church was rebuilt into a residential building. The Ramm family lived in the monastery until 1766, when it caught fire in a thunderstorm.

The monastery was never restored, but the construction of a new manor house was started next to the monastery.

Today it's a really nice museum worth a visit 👍

Very old building, have stairs to the observation tower on top, as on June 2019 massive restoration is in process, but accessible.

During my visit, there was a farmers market and medieval fair happening. So, I might have come at the perfect time, skewing this review a tad. I had a lot of fun trying various activities and just exploring the monetary. A mix of spooky and fascinating.

Incredibly goregeous area and just a short distance away from the Arvo Pärt centre. Nicely preserved, cute neighboring cafe. Surrounded by forest and a river. Real nice area

Always excited to visit this old monastery! It is a former Cistercian abbey in Padise in Harju county in Estonia. It's fun to walk through the extensive well preserved and currently renovated ruins. Ancient staircases and staircases provide a grandiose view of the area and the privately owned first class restaurant and hotel in the mansion.

This place has a long history, dating back to 1310. Today the ruins are open for visitors 24/7. I would recommend visiting the ruins with a guide, as the legends and stories that go along the place make the experience so much better. Also if possible take the evening or night tour with the candle light.
