Challenging but worth it. Very steep and the way up seems endless as it looks always the same for the last few hours, but once on top you’ll realize you have never seen the sun that big. This is a truly unique place in the world!

The climb was not as technical as I thought it would be based on what I've read, but it definitely requires a measure of strength, stamina, and a large share of deep breaths! Amazing climb with a gorgeous sunrise at the top.

The most spectacular views of Chimborazo volcano from our drive from Baños to Cuenca. The snow caps reminded us of the snow from the Adirondack Mountains in NY. Just breathtaking!

Amazing mountain

We ate dinner and rested at high camp before starting our climb at midnight

We climbed with guides and turned around about half way up the mountain due to avalanche danger

Overall great adventure and will likely be back

Just reading about this volcano, known via Alexander von Humboldt. He thought in 1799, that this mountain was the highest mountain in the world! Without oxygen they did not quite reach the summit because of a glacier gap!

Lucky enough to see some wildlife in the reservation, but couldn't get a better look at the volcano because of the cloudy weather. Just had a glance of the peak when we get to the end of the road.

Definately a must of youre staying nearby, e.g. Riobamba.
How to get here: Take a bus from the terminal of Riobamba (3$). It will drop you at the base if the mountain. From there you can start climbing or you can just get into a car (20$ for 4 people) that will drive you to the first refugio. From there you can climb to the second refugio, as well as the lagoon. I recommend taking a bus early in the morning, due to the weather usually being better.

Successfuly made it to the summit yesterday morning! Just on time for sunrise.

I booked my climb with Fabián Chuto and his agency Aventuras de Montaña in Riobamba. Fabián set me up with his fellow guide Raúl and lent me all the equipment I was missing, including high altitude shoes and sleeping bag. Raúl and I made the journey from high camp (5300m) to the summit (6263m) in 4h14min, leaving camp at 1:35am.

A highlight! Due to the flattening of the earth at the poles, Chimborazo (6,263m) is not only the highest mountain in Ecuador, but also the highest mountain in the world (6,384.4km) measured from the center of the earth. But however you measure the height, it is an impressive mountain!

I hiked up to 5100m of Chimborazo with Urcuroots. Interestingly I didn’t feel dizzy because of the altitude even if it was the highest point I have ever been to. The views were amazing. It was very nice to see hummingbirds and vicuñas. I am so glad that I had this experience.

Amazing walk to the 2nd refuge at 5,000 metres which can be accessed by car or by tour bus at the 4,800 metre parking point and walk up . There is also down hill mountain bike riding tours from there as well. But all of this will have to be booked in from the nearest town.(Riobamba, Ambato or Banos) As there is basically nothing up there besides a few vending machines at the entrance with a very very basic cafe that sells tea and some instant coffee. Breath taking views and a great experience.

A natural wonder. It’s best if you go on a non cloudy day. This place is beautiful even when cloudy. Yes If you are not accustomed to the altitude you will find yourself grasping for air more frequently but the views are so worth it. You will not regret it!

The Chimborazo measured from the center of the Earth Planet is the mountain and point more highest of the Planet, with your 20702 feet of altitude from the sea level, here we would admire the infinite and little we are (take suncare and enjoy everything with foresight)

Beautifull mountain of light. There is no place closer from earth to the stars than majestic Chimborazo.
So many stories and trips through this enchanted land of volcanoes.

An amazing site but a difficult climb. Can take a car up to around 4800m but you have to walk the rest. On a clear day, views are stunning. Best time to view is early morning before the clouds arrive.

One of the most amazing trips I have ever taken in my life! Once at the outpost for climbers I got my passport stamped by the local stewards of the mountain. This was many years ago (1999 if Im correct, unfortunately I have not many photos from that era) but I plan on returning next year! (2023)
