Battenberg Castle

Came here today on a rainy October 2022 afternoon with a friend and our four kids ages 6, 4, 3, and 2 years. I had called earlier in the afternoon to make a 14:30 reservation; the staff over the phone and in the restaurant during our meal spoke English wonderfully. We used Google Maps with this pin as our GPS destination - this will get you very close, but it unfortunately tells you you've arrived right at the sharp turn of the nameless preceding road right near the Naturdenkmal Blitzohren. From there, you have to continue driving and then make your next right (where there are signs pointing to "Battenberg Burg") which leads you directly to the castle through some vineyards. We parked directly in front of the castle and walked through the main entrance into the "courtyard" and found the restaurant immediately on the left. The wooden door into the restaurant that is the main entrance wasn't marked and we both walked by it (even arriving separately) before we realized that's where we had to go. The building for the restaurant is quite charming and has an elegant modern touch to an otherwise historic structure, both inside and out. The first floor is cozy with fur-style rugs and cushions on wooden chairs and stone walls, and the upstairs has seating but has a brighter, more open feel with small but clean bathrooms on that level. The food was phenomenal, if slightly expensive - we got 4 large glasses of wine (smaller glasses and bottles were both available), 3 soups, and a steak which totaled 90 euro, and we were also given bread. The service was acceptable, if slightly slow (surprising as it seemed not to be busy, but I believe there might be an event room, so hard to say if there was more going on we couldn't see, and business did pick up later in the afternoon in the main dining area). After our meal we walked around the courtyard, which was rather expansive with gardens and several large outdoor patio seating areas as well as a lookout point. Would be absolutely wonderful to visit on a summer day! Of note, I DID try to come during the summer but that "nameless" road leading to the village from L517 had been closed, and I couldn't find a way around, so perhaps just have a look at the map before coming in case that happens again. Overall, this is a fantastic restaurant, perhaps not exactly kid friendly but was a great experience for us, as were the castle grounds and the spielplatz right down the road that we visited after.

Some of the best food I’ve ever eaten. Came on a rainy spring day and the clouds parted showing an amazing view of the Rhine valley. What an incredible stop!

We've been there on a cold, foggy, late autumn Saturday afternoon - so because of the fog we missed the beautiful views mentioned by other people.
The location itself is great - a huge beautiful garden, which should be amazing on a sunny weather. Or a clear summer night. For us, sitting out was not an option (because of the weather).
Things are looking very nice also inside; quite small, but cosy rooms (on 2 levels), with a warm and pleasant atmosphere.
Food was very tasty and nice cooked, wine was also excellent. The selection is not very wide, but personally I wouldn't need more.
The staff was friendly and welcoming.
For us it was a very nice experience - even we spent quite few time, a refreshing stop during a hike in the area.
Definitely we'll be back someday!

What a fantastic view from the castle ruin! It is easily reached with a car but seems worth hiking as well. The restaurant within the castle looks good too. We will visit again.

Kleines gemütliches Hotel mit angeschlossenem Weingut und Restaurant in der Burg. Geräumige Zimmer mit herrlichem Ausblick auf den Pfälzer Wald/Rheinebene.

Habe die Überreste der Burg angeschaut. Tolle Aussicht. Im Restaurant waren wir nicht.

Wir waren am einem verregneten Tag die einzigen Gäste.
Küche und Service haben überzeugt und wir fühlten uns gut aufgehoben.

Sehr gute Speisen: Tafelspitz auf Lauchgemüse mit Meerrettich Soße: unbeschreiblich fein und lecker. Pfälzer Teller, Bratkartoffeln, alles sehr gut. Rumpsteak genau richtig. Bedienung freundlich und fleißig.

Ostersonntag. Musik spielte sehr angenehm. Unsere Bedienung war richtig freundlich und zuvorkommend. Das Essen ausgezeichnet. Insgesamt ein wunderschöner Tag und ein tolles Ambiente.

Lecker Essen. Toller Ausblick auf die Weinberge in der Rheinebene und Ausgangspunkt für eine tolle Burgenwanderung.

Update September 2023:

Essen, Service und Ambiente immer noch spitze.

Ich möchte nur mal eine Situation schildern, welche mich echt etwas ratlos zurückgelassen hat. Wir waren zu viert am Samstag Mittag, bei bestem Wetter, draußen im Garten gesessen. Gleichzeitig war eine große Gruppe mit ca. 20 Personen, eine Hochzeit und mehrere Tische belegt. In der Stunde die wir hier gesessen hatten, kamen spontan zwei Gruppen 1x 7 Personen und 1x 8 Personen und fragen nach Tischen. Die Servicekräfte haben beiden Gruppen ganz freundlich erklärt, dass es aufgrund der Situation nur noch möglich ist, sich spontan für ein paar Getränke zu setzen, aber nicht mehr für Essen. Ich konnte es verstehen. Beide Gruppen haben sehr entrüstet und arrogant reagiert. Eine Gruppe hat gedroht, dass sie den Chef kennen und das dass Konsequenzen haben wird und eine Gruppe hat mit einer 1 Sterne Bewertung hier bei Google gedroht.

Was ist mit diesen Leuten los? Hat es mit einer begrenzten Intelligenz zu tun, die Situation nicht erfassen zu können oder mit einem arroganten Selbstbild, im Mittelpunkt aller Geschehnisse zu stehen? 🤷🏼‍♂ Ich kann nur sagen, man kann die Gutschenke immer für eine Reservierung erreichen und wenn man spontan auftaucht, versuchen die Leute hier echt immer einen Platz zu finden.

Das musste ich jetzt mal schildern, weil sich das Team wirklich Mühe gibt und diese Kritik bzw. 1 Sterne Bewertungen nicht der Realität entsprechen.

Ein wunderschöner Ort mit vorzüglicher Aussicht zum Genießen. Tolles Ambiente, guter Service gutes Esser und leckerer Wein.
