Beautiful castle, worth the money. More than enough to see. There are many stairs and small “hallways” so keep that in mind while visiting, but definitely worth the experience 🙂

Such a great place in the heart of Ruhr area. A great way to spend Sunday with your family. I am just amazed at how well everything is preserved and authentic.

No words to describe the beauty of this castle. So well preserved and with acces to most of the rooms... Also the access to the elevator from the tunnel is simply amazing. The elevator was 4.9 Euro per person, but worth every scent.

One of the most beautiful castles I've ever been to and is a very practical castle meant for practical purposes. Location is super easy bus and lift from center city, both good but you see a lot by bus. See their kitchen, how towers are made livable. Has a very nice restaurant with good assortment of food. super nice staff always smiling at you and guiding. Though from 1430 to 1730 kitchen is closed. The Rundweg around the castle has excellent views esp just at the gate. It felt a worthy place to spend a lot of time as was super peaceful. If they would dress all the staff in clothes from the time castle was built this would be perfect. This is one place that i would call super managed perfectly.nit is a must go place.

The ambience of the this city is lovely..
Despite small in size, and also very little hike, it is just amazing half day trip. The castle is beautiful 😍. Also free of charge is the entry. It closes at 17:30, so better plan your trip in day time. The restaurant in the castle is nice. Unfortunately, I don't think it's open right now, because when I was there, it wasn't. There is a lovely museum and a small dungeon too.
Apart from this, there is a outside perimeter of the castle, and huge tree just behind the castle where you can sit and have a peaceful time with winds.

The castle has been well preserved for centuries. The castle has a good location and beautiful scenery. In addition, it has a rich collection, such as medieval weapons, armor and animal specimens. Now it seems to be free of charge.

the castle is very beautiful and the entrance is accessible to everyone, but all the exhibits are only described in German, it would be very good if they were also in English for tourists!

A magic place with a awesome view of the city.
Stayed here while traveling when I saw a beatifull castle on the hill. You can drive by car to the castle gate, car parking is under gate but i prefere to walk because there are a historic houses along the way. Entrance to the castle is for free but if you want visit to the museum you have to pay a few € ( is not expensive ). Place a worth to see !

Nice view from the top and the castle itself is well preserved. There are plenty of spots for nice photo. I can imagine it is also nice in the evening with lights on.

This is an awesome place to visit when you are in the area. It's a very well preserved castle at a unsuspecting location. Great views from the top and best accessible through the elevator from the main shopping street. I wish I got there a bit earlier to explore the different rooms. When you are there, make sure to climb to the top of the main tower.

We went to this place on cloudy Sunday in Autumn, the place itself is very nice to spend few hours.
Transport: we went there by car as there was road construction going kn, we parked our car a km away. There is also a path which takes directly to the castle, as we saw many cars parked there.
Reaching the castle: As said you could directly reach by car else there two other possibilities, there is a lift that operates from the bottom of hill and then there is a small hike. We chose to hike.
The place: the place itself is nice and well maintained. There are opportunities to walk around the castle and inside the castle, you have to purchase ticket. If you have ruhrtopcard then it's accepted here.
Eating : there is a restaurant inside the castle where you can plan your meal, we packed our food as there was lots of tables to sit inside the castle.
Hope this helps.

A rustic, manly-man's castle. Thick natural stone walls, powder towers, ramparts. Set on a rocky hill above the river Lenne, this castle controlled three valleys and served as a main seat of the local dukes, the counts of the Mark. Expect a hilly climb up, from a picturesque but bit run down town, feel like you are storming the castle when you arrive slightly short of breath. If exercise is not for you, there is an elevator. Once up there, roam through the knight's armor collection, medieval weapons, and wear some chain mail to see how heavy it is. Or enjoy a bite at the restaurant terrace overlooking the river valley. Highly recommended!

I can recommend a visit here with your family, it's not boring at all ... It's not as good as the castle's in Scotland but hey it's in Altena .... Enjoy your visit .

Surprisingly much to see, you'll really spend a couple of hours here. High towers with excellent views, dark chambers with dark history.. Lots of medieval gear, a very nice small chapel and much more await you. Definitively recommend a visit. 👍
