Die Ersterwähnung Coppanz wird für das Jahr 1236 bezeugt. Im Sächsischen Bruderkrieg (1446–1451) dann vollständig zerstört und über 200 Jahre wüst, erfolgt mit der Genehmigung Herzog Ernst August ab 1723 die Wiederbesiedlung der Ortschaft durch Ammerbacher Bürger. Erst im Jahr 1812 wurde dann die Dorfkirche, wahrscheinlich als ein Neubau, im Baustil des Klassizismus errichtet. Es ist ein schmuckloser, einfach gehaltener Bau mit einschiffigen Langhaus, rechteckigen Chor und Chorturm.
