The primary attraction in Lubeck is this gate, serving as a prominent entry point to the old city. Positioned along the river and surrounded by historic brick buildings, strolling through these historical streets and dining by the riverside is truly enjoyable.

Holstentor is the western gate of the fortified medieval city which was the capital of entire Hansaetic League of Baltic cities for centuries.
Dating back to 1464, it is considered one of the most beautiful medieval gates in all Germany, and for that reason was even on the back side of the old 50 DM banknote.
The gate is really stunning - fairy tale like and little bit leaned.
Inside is a small historic museum with models and history explanation and great gift shop. The outer face has gun openings for city protection, while the inner face is richly decorated. Perfect photo op both, day and night

I didn't go in to the building - not sure it was even open to be honest as both times I walked through there were no obvious signs. The building is one of the old city gates and the emblem of modern Lubeck. It is a very impressive, brick built fifteenth century fortification but now stands in isolation, the city walls having been removed in the nineteenth century.
There is an interesting contrast between the inside and outside walls of the building. The walls facing the city have lots of windows and are very ornate, the exterior walls have far fewer openings other than those for guns. There are also doubts over the accuracy of the early twentieth century restorations.

The Holsten Gate is a city gate marking off the western boundary of the old center Lübeck. It was built in 1464 and is the symbol of the city. The Brick Gothic construction is one of the relics of Lübeck's medieval city fortifications and one of two remaining city gates.

While this monument is very impressive on the outside, no visit to Lübeck would be complete without a visit to the museum inside. You gain a better understanding as to the original purpose of this structure as well as the time period it was built. Be prepared to walk up steps in both towers (no elevators) but this is part of the charm of Holstentor.

Unique experience of starring an immigration gate built somewhere about 1400's. The city Lübeck is a cocktail of different European countries (my opinion). It got the row houses like in Copenhagen, High rise buildings like in Vienna, canals like in Amsterdam and many more Gothic style architecture. It's really beautiful!

I didn't visit the museum though, the gate looks elegant and beautiful in the old city. There is a lawn in the entrance to the beautiful gate where u can sit and can enjoy some quality and valuable time. This place also has history, if you are enthusiastic and curious to know the history behind the gate do visit this place.

I just looked at the castle. It was more stunning in real life than it was in photos. It looked like a princess opened the gates for the whole population to play inside it.

Nice open public place in the middle of the city

The main sight in Lubeck, this gate a big focal point for entering the old city. Located right on the river too by some old brick buildings. Didn't go inside, just came for a picture. Highly recommend visiting.

Beautiful building that served as a town gate in a complex of four. Built between 1464 and 1478 by architect Hinrich Helmstede, it has been reconstructed twice in 1863 and 1933. It houses a museum that I haven't had the chance to visit.

Beautiful town with beautiful people. A real pleasure to walk this streets of history, to eat at the riverside, to visit the museums and churches and take the lift up in the highest tower.

Seriously, this place is full of story and the most beautiful architecture. Never get tired of going there alone, w family or friends. It's an amazing place

Best attraction in Lubeck and worth the visit. Right behind the Museum, the city of lubeck starts. Loved the visit!!! It should be visited during summer and spring, try Kayaking in the beautiful river of Lubeck. Its Medivial look is amazing .

Brilliant to learn about the history of the city of Lübeck!

Amazing gate to lubeck survived the demolition of the city walls by two votes in a referendum. The gate now is the icon of lubeck as well as schleswick holstein. The building is almost 650 years old and still a marvel to the eye

Extraordinary museum of Lübeck trade history. First visit here, then head off to the Hanse Museum to see the forest after having seen the tree.
