These ruins were so beautiful! I’m noticing some of the reviews here mentioning the inside garden was closed- as long as you check their closing times, you are able to enter the garden for free, which is beautifully well-kept. We actually drove from San Jose just to see this and get out of the city. It’s a small ruin, but a beautiful place to walk around and then sit and enjoy the garden inside. The main basilica is about a 10 minute walk from here to make it a nice destination.

Really nice and write place you can enjoy yo recharge batteries and continue your day.
Most likely it will be peaceful during the weekdays, on weekends is full of people, take that into account if you want to sit for a while and relax.

Worth the visit but the ruins are actually an unfinished construction - mainly the walls of what would have been an impressive cathedral in the heart of Cartago. Good space for kids to run around, relax under the trees in a hot day and take cute selfies. Free entrance.

Widely known as "Las Ruinas" the Ruins of Santiago Apóstol are an unfinished church. Its construction was interrupted by the 1910 earthquake. The original church dates from 1575. There is a nearby square with a huge Costa Rican flag which is also nice. There is no entrance fee to visit these ruins.

Unique photo opportunities, very clean grassy areas to sit-down, and ample open space to people watch and relax. The inner courtyard was closed when I visited but it looked very beautiful inside. You can read the signs that are in the courtyard from the gates to learn more about the history.

Beautiful public square/park with ruins of an old church. The site has had several churches built over centuries which were destroyed in earthquakes. Now it's a great spot where you can take shelter from the hot sun. The trees inside are gorgeous.

Beautiful garden inside the ruins. With metal art scattered through the gardens. You are actually allowed to touch the art too!! Information signs in English and Spanish about the history.

Ruins of the Temple of the Haunted Santiago Apostol Parish is worth the trip to see this amazing place. Six attempts to re-build this temple were destroyed by earthquakes. According to an old legend, every foggy night in Cartago, it is possible to see a headless priest inside the ruins whose ghost must wander forever as a penance for desecrating a holy place.

Beautiful from every angle. Went on a Saturday, the gates were locked. I have no idea if they're open during the week. Would have been lovely to see the garden inside. It's smaller than I expected though. But, quick stop if you're in Cartago.
