When choosing Max the Mutt, I was looking for a school that had an in depth art program, allowing me to build the artistic foundations right from the grass roots level to the advanced techniques that are currently being used in the industry by many artists. Most importantly, I wanted to be part of an institution that adhered to the discipline of "hands on" academic learning. My decision was strongly affected by the portfolios the students were able to produce and also the rich experience of the instructors. Their passion and dedication to teaching is of the highest standard and a great motivator for the student. The community is small but focused giving both the instructors and students the opportunity to address any concerns on a one-to-one basis.I am currently enrolled in the first year of the sequential arts program and it has been a great experience so far. My foundations have improved tremendously and I cannot wait to elevate that experience in the coming years.

Your success depends on the way you learn. If you have a strong drive and passion for art and can adapt to the pace of the information taught in the respective programs, it will be very advantageous. If you have no prior experience in art, it will build a strong work ethic and give you the tools necessary to become a successful artist. I strongly recommend Max the Mutt to anyone looking for a concrete art program and a career in the fields of Sequential Illustration, Concept Art and Animation.

I'm going into my third year of Sequential Arts at Max the Mutt, School of Animation and Design. Having been in a post secondary school a few years prior, I can honestly say that Max the Mutt is where I have felt the most comfortable, being myself. My past two years have been some of the most wonderful years I have ever spent in a school. The students are amazing and highly skilled, with different styles, all unique to them. The teachers, even more so. I feel so honor to be learning from the amazing staff here. I won't lie, it's a tough curriculum. You must be focused and willing to take criticism, otherwise you will never grow as an artist. I have seen such a vast improvement in my artwork since my first year, it sometimes overwhelms me. I know that with hard work and dedication, my skills will continue to grow. My hopes for the future are to one day be on a skill level matching those of my teachers and work along aside these amazing people who I call artists and friends.

I only just completed my first year at Max the Mutt. I decided to attend the school at the suggestion of my friend who works as an animator and attended the school 5 years back. It is a tough program but I have to quote my friend on it, "If you didn't know how to draw going in, you'll know how going out."

On a more in depth explaination : the class sizes are small which is really nice. The instructors are often professionals coming in to teach between work shifts/projects, as well as past students, so they are very knowledgeable and passionate. I have gotten some really good feedback and constructive criticism to help improve my own work. When speaking with others in the animation industry, Max the Mutt students are commented on being good workers, ready to do what is asked of them with little extra teaching when coming on new projects. Nowhere is perfect and of course there are little hang ups here and there but so far I would suggest this school to an inspiring animator/concept artist/sequential artist.

A suggestion if you wish to attend the school : buy way more newsprint than expected.

To be honest when I first heard of Max the Mutt, I was skeptical. I didn't believe that a school with a name like that could be a serious institution. Now, I have finished my second year in Animation, it is safe to say I was wrong. The school is very focused on giving you strong classical drawing skills. The class sizes are small, the teachers are passionate and the workload is intense. A school like Max the Mutt will give you the foundation you need. I recommend Max the Mutt to anyone is serious about pursuing a career in Animation, Illustration, Sequential Arts and Concept Art.

I'm a Concept Art student heading into my fourth year at Max.

I really appreciate this school as it actually teaches the skills necessary to get employed as an artist, and they DON'T make you listen to endless lectures full of useless info like they did at the University of Waterloo, where I earned a useless bachelor's degree in Architecture.

I'm currently employed as an illustrator and comic book artist even though I haven't even graduated from Max yet. I've also received acceptance letters as an Flash animator and background painter. Obviously, the skill sets taught at the school overlap.

In my opinion, Max is an excellent school which supports its students and strives to imbue them with a good work ethic and give them the skills and resources they will need to succeed and improve themselves. The school has instructors from all over the world who are excellent in their respective fields, and the curriculum is always in a process of refinement.

Every school has its own unique challenges, but if you are patient, ambitious, and willing to work though your frustrations then this school will get you to the point where you can be employed and know how to teach yourself beyond the classroom.

Max the Mutt is the perfect school for someone who wants a familiar environment where you can develop yourself as an artist. The teachers would not just teach you the technical side of art, they will also help you understand the spiritual side and the sensitivity of art itself, furthermore, you are spending time with people who are passionate for the same as you, making it easy to forge great friendship with the people who surround you. Max the Mutt is a great choice for anyone willing to learn and express themselves in the world of plastic arts, animation, sequential and conceptual arts. I will encourage anyone to pay a visit, so you can actually see how easy it is to fall in love with this school.

Maxthemutt offers a fantastic community with instructors and staff that truly and genuinely want to see you succeed and attain the goals you've only ever dreamt of. As an alumni of MaxtheMutt, I can proudly say that I loved every single waking second I was here. The relationships that I've made over the years, whether it be through fellow classmates, instructors, or even the administration and staff, will last a lifetime. I've learned so much over the years and am grateful to have had an opportunity to learn from some of the finest instructors I've ever met.

Year 1 completed 2013-2014

I chose this school carefully after reviewing all the art programs available in Toronto in 2012.

After a professional friend said they were working with people from MtM, I was sold.

I had already reviewed the program online and was intrigued. While looking for a master's caliber curriculum for my continuing education, Max stood out from any school I had reviewed before.
They promised Eastern European principles would be taught. Many tricks of the trade that have fallen by the wayside in these North American schools over the last century.

Now, I have not only been through a Art's College in the states for my Bachelors, But a Arts High school before that, and nowhere along the way was my training so rigorous and thorough. There aren't any gaping loop holes to "take the easy way through" here. You WILL learn and you WILL improve, as long as you have the will and the drive.

In the first year I have learned techniques that have been tried and true for centuries and solved conundrums that have vexed me through my entire artistic development (Point to point, Scan and Compare, Perspective, etc) . I can only relate the experience to studying in a whacky monastery and being enlightened every single day.

First year has been amazing, and I look forward to the next.

My experience with MTM was summed up in 6 words: “How bad do you want it.” Taking that mindset and running with it resulted in securing a position before graduation. Before I entered MTM I was warned in detail about the enormity of the required workload. It was something I truthfully did not fully understand until I entered MTM. Many of my instructors were face deep in the industry so much of their teachings reflected the demands they encounter while on the job. It wasn’t until halfway into my 2nd year that I realized just how much insight I had been given as to what was expected in order for me to get the dream job I wanted. From following their teachings, taking their harsh, but absolutely true criticisms, I learned, improved, and grew into the artist I wanted to be. I personally have been to many schools, encountering several different fields of study before I settled on pursuing my dream at MTM. What I learned was that EVERY institution has its kinks - none are perfect. BUT there are nuggets to be found if you put the time in and search for them. That is what it’s about, putting the time in. So, I ask you, how bad do you want it? MTM gave me more than what I needed. When I asked questions, they gave more still. So yes I recommend MTM to anyone, but I warn you as they did me, the work is hard, very hard.

I took the comic design workshop here, and had a blast! Learned more than I thought I'd need in this class, skills that I didn't even know I needed, it was a really fun and hands on experience. My instructor, Carla, was incredibly nice and amazing to work with, as well as being good at teaching

Enrolled in "Creating Web comics from Start to Finish", a wonderful online comic drawing course with the talented Carla! Had lot's of fun with her lectures and real time online drawing exercises. Great opportunity to share your projects with lots of other talented digital artists. Highly recommended for young budding Web comic artists!

This is a very good school. The school is intense and teaches you nearly everything you need to know about the courses they teach, as well as classical fine art. I recommend this school to anyone interested in having a career in Animation, Concept art or Sequential art.

Great faculty and facilities, a wonderful school that will teach you all that you need for a career and then some. As long as you bring a good work ethic and leave your ego at home, Max the Mutt exceeds all expectations.
